Silk Road Discussion / Re: Forum Changes
« on: October 26, 2013, 11:49:49 pm »
Changes to the forum

Some of you have already noticed I have made a number of changes to the forum so here is a quick brief about them. Some features such as BB coding are running on trial however so please do not abuse them or use it in such a way which will irritate other users. I will be reviewing each of these features over the next few days and if they are found to be abused or unpopular they will be removed again.

BB Coding

BB coding is a simplistic form of HTML. To use it we use "tags" which open with "[" and close with "]", more known as the "square brackets". In between the two brackets you must specify a code which will be used. For example

Code: [Select]
This test will be normal but this text will be bold.
Will look like:

This text will be normal but this text will be bold.

The following codes have been enabled: b, blue, center, code, green, hr, i, list, quote, red, u

As a final reminder, BB codes inside a PGP signed message will break it and therefore should not be used inside anything that is to be signed with PGP unless it is only the contents of a code tag.

Anti-Spam Measures

Following a few attempts to impersonate staff and scam users I have introduced a blank filter. Each successive spam attack will then be added to the blacklist so details such as associated bitcoin addresses, emails, URLs and so forth will be added to the list. This filter will only take effect on the public forum and to combat mail spam, I have added further CAPTCHA's to users sending out unusually fast messages, plus temporary mail limits so you may only have 1 to 1 conversations with other members, group messages are now disabled to prevent a spammer sending their messages to many users with only one CAPTCHA entry.

If you know of URL's associated with phishing or scamming then please send me a message with it explaining what it is and why it should be added.

Forum Search Restrictions

This was one of the most common issues which annoyed many on the previous forum. After some stress testing I am confident that removing the search restrictions will pose no problem to the integrity of the forum. It may however take up to 5 minutes for new content to appear in searches however due to the search database now being separate to the main forum database to ensure one does not hinder the other.

"All" View Option

I have added the option to view all posts in a topic up to 5000 posts in length, this should make keeping a copy (via "Save Page") of the forum easier or if you wish to follow a thread from start to finish. Please take into account long pages of over 500 posts may take a few seconds longer to load.

That is all for now. Any further suggestions please add them to the Features Requests forum - I read every topic posted there so will see any ideas you wish to contribute. Stay tuned for further market launch details coming soon!

Any chance of reconsidering the group message ban at some stage DPR? A few of us communicate in groups, it's a great way to stay connected in a more private way as many of us do not openly discuss a range of issues on the forums. If the concern relates to spam just limiting the number of recipients to say 5 along with the other measures you have implemented should suffice.

Having the virtual machines in a encrypted truecrypt container is of course preferable over having them unencrypted. You could create a bootable sd card (on a usb thumb drive card reader) with a persistent linux and install truecrypt and virtualbox on it. Make sure it doesn't have a swap file. If you need to get rid of it you can break the sd card open and burn it. It's easier to destroy than a normal usb thumb drive but the life time of a thumb drive may be larger.

You could also create a script which overwrites the sd card with zeros if you don't have time to burn it. In that case a fast sd card and card reader which supports that speed would be of advantage.

Don't rely simply on encryption. Your right to keep the password for yourself doesn't matter when they threaten your family. Making the password useless by destroying the encrypted data is better.

overwriting doent work so well on storages other than traditional hdd, if the storage is going to be a sd or usb it's even more important that your setup doen't depend on secure wipe

Always use a brand new USB or SD card, as you say they do not overwrite fully either so the only way to be safe is to destroy it.

Encryption does shit in the scenario I am saying. If LE bust in and I don't hand over the password in court that can be admission of guilt.

Assuming you're in the USA, shouldn't the 5th amendment cover this? Seems like handing over password would be essentially self-incrimination.

There has been a case now where this has been tested and the right to withhold the password for the reasons stated was upheld, now judicial precedent has been set I would hope this will help define the legal situation for any future cases of this nature, hopefully anyway.

Dont they still try to crack it anyways? I mean for instance if you had a simple combination lock and they asked you to put the code it to unlock it and you plead the 5th and didnt have to, wouldnt they still try to go through the few hundred combinations to find it?

Of course and if you used a weak password they might crack it too.

« on: October 26, 2013, 05:19:32 pm »
I did not reuse addresses ... But pasted the last inadvertantly!

My posts here are because it is possible to access my wallet if SR admin have a backup and can send my wallets private key once validated against my pin!

I am sure that a lot of SR members would also like to recover their btc's which were not held in the escrow wallet ...

The Feds seized the site, SR admins do not have a backup and no one is getting their btc back I'm afraid. Just don't send them any more ok! They appear to have more than enough  >:(

^^^^^^^^

Couldn't agree more. In the time I've been in the online drugs game now there are 4 basic rules I've learned:

1. Don't discuss which vendors are coming through.
2. Don't discuss anonymous drop methods.
3. Don't discuss vendor cash-out techniques
4. Talk about anything else you like.

The reason for rules 1-3 is because it ruins the fun for everyone else. Everything that gets said here is read by police officers & journalists, so pick your words carefully and don't share techniques that are comprised by the virtue of everyone knowing them.

Hope everyone's having a good weekend!

Can we have this added to the OP as rules of engagement for this thread, we can then redirect and hopefully shut down the plethora of other aussie threads I've been disappointed to see popping up on here, everyone should be quite direct about policing this for the safety of everyone.

Thanks guys  :) same to you, it's coffee time down under.

Anyone see that interview with Russell Brand and Jeremy Paxman doing the rounds on social media?  Fucking outstanding if you missed it, the 11 min version is the one to watch, he gets quite ferocious towards the end.

The adim told me I needed to verify who I was by messaging him my password. I thought it was a strange request, but it was the Admin, so I thought, "Why not?"

Did I fuck up?

The only time you will ever be asked for your password is when someone is trying to scam you.

So yeah you fucked up.

I am a large vendor coming back on the scene and I am re-setting up shop in terms of security.

I will be using two laptops running whonix with physical isolation.
The one with whonix gateway and the one with whonix workstation.

My question is, in the case the Feds are at my door, how can I wipe the laptops in a quick way. I would be fine with the spoilation of evidence over the drug charges.

Is there some self destruct button type thing I can install or is the super earth magnets the best I will get.

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks

Set the VM's up on encrypted media like an SD card, if need be you can destroy that very quickly leaving nothing on your computer apart from virtualbox, you might be able to host that on a USB, SD card too.
