Hey gang,

I want to set up a Silk Road wiki so we can have all of the faq's answered in one spot and hopefully remove some of the clutter of repeated questions from the forum.  Anyone who's set up a wiki before want to administer this?  I could do it, but I want to get more community members involved and a wiki is a great community project anyway.

Silk Road discussion / Buyer stats
« on: August 23, 2011, 04:17 am »

Hey gang,

We've just put in a new feature that we hope will give sellers much more protection from dishonest buyers.  By and large, the people that come here to make purchases are honest and fair, but as with most things, we have to focus our attention on the few that would take advantage of the system.  With that in mind, sellers now have the ability to view some limited statistics about the people who want to do business with them, so they can better judge who they are willing to work with.  We only track and display the most essential metrics that will help our sellers in their choices while not revealing too much about our buyers, for whom secrecy is so important.  For more info, take a look at the buyer's and seller's guides.

If this is insufficient to deter dishonest buyers, we will look into other possible measures.

Best regards,
Silk Road staff

We had this same issue about 2 weeks ago where many people were able to access the site, but a few couldn't, and we couldn't identify any bottlenecks on our side.  The problem fixed itself last time, but we'll continue to look into what the issue might be.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Silk Road discussion / Re: Silk Road is hiring a unix administrator
« on: August 17, 2011, 03:27 am »
Really? I don't think this is a good idea. How could he not be in a position to compromise the site?
You have to at least give him some sort of SSH access, and local root exploits are a dime a dozen.
Just do your homework and run OpenBSD with full ASLR and isolate each process in a VM. Then your site is virtually impenetrable.

Access is not necessary.  At least at first, this person will be more of a dedicated expert adviser.  There are many layers to this site and more we want to add, and unfortunately my expertise and time are maxed out.  Several members have been very generous in volunteering their time to help improve the site, but by their nature, volunteers can only do so much and have other obligations.  Right now we need someone with plenty expertise who can dedicate their time to this project and help take it to the next level.  If all goes well, we'll be opening up other positions too.

your concern is appropriate.  However, the person we hire will not be put in a position to be able to compromise the site.  There are also substantial advantages over using someone I know.  In an operation like this, people are the biggest liability.  Someone I know and trust can tell someone I don't know and trust what's going on.  If this person needs to be let go for any reason, there are no loose ends.

UPDATE:
I've been blown away by the caliber of the applicants so far.  We're going to move on to the last phase in the application process, so any last-minute applications need to be in by midnight UTC, Aug 31st.

We are looking for a unix administrator to add to our team.  The person in this position will be responsible for the security, reliability and performance of our servers.  They should have at least several years of experience and be able to formulate and clearly communicate new ideas for improving our systems.  This is a temporary position that could turn into a more permanent arrangement depending on your performance and character.  To apply, please send your answers to the following questions via the "contact us" link on the main site.  Use the subject line "unix admin application".

Why do you want to join the Silk Road team?

Describe your experience as a unix admin and your skill set.  Do you have other skills that might be applicable to our operation?

If you were starting from scratch, how would you set up the Silk Road servers to maximize security, performance, and reliability?

Are you able to work full-time (40+ hrs/week), part-time (at least 20 hrs/week), or both?

How much would you need to be paid?

Were you referred by someone?  Who?

How did you hear about Silk Road?

What is your drug of choice, if any?

Anything else we should consider?

We are offering a $1000 to anyone who refers the person we hire :)

the problem seems like a bottleneck issue.  however, we've been scouring the system for bottlenecks and can't find any.  My hunch is that the increased bandwith usage from all of the new images isn't playing well with tor, but we'll see.

Hey gang,

The intermittence just came to my attention.  The server is up and many people are able to access the site, but for some reason not everyone can.  We're looking into the problem and will post updates on this thread.  For those who can't get on, there's no need to worry about losing any data or anything like that.

Sorry for the trouble

We are happy to announce a new category in the marketplace called Forgeries.  In this category, you will find offers for forged, government issued documents including fake ids and passports.

This category comes with some restrictions, however.  Sellers may not list forgeries of any privately issued documents such as diplomas/certifications, tickets or receipts.  Also, listings for counterfeit currency are still not allowed in the money section.

our bitcoin software crashed, halting our deposit processor.  It should be all caught up now, sorry for the trouble.  This is the second time this has happened, so we are going to put in a measure to check the software periodically and restart it if it has stopped.
