UPDATE 2: We are waiting on a backup to restore. Site will be launched as soon as the servers are ready for it. I estimate one hour out, 23:59 UTC roughly.

UPDATE: We are delaying the launch for three hours while we investigate the forum PGP issue, official launch time is now 23:00 UTC.

Silk Road will rise again at 20:00 UTC on Feb 18, 2014.

We will relaunch the marketplace earlier in the day with transactions disabled, and enable full functionality at 20:00 UTC.

We are paying very close attention to detail, not rushing anything. Your patience is appreciated during these dark times.

To many among you facilitating unity: your words are pivotal in this movement's historic success. We are deeply grateful for you.

Important Reminders:

1. No staff were involved with the attack. I know this to be a fact. You will undoubtedly question how I know this. I wish I could tell you without damaging a crucial layer of our operational security. I would rather you call me the thief than accuse my innocent staff of wrongdoing. I will defend them with my life.

Conspiracy theories only distract from narco93's investigation. If you want to throw fuel into a lynch mob throw it into narco's lynch mob. Don't start a new riot on zero evidence, and don't post evidence publicly without consulting staff. There are many angry people here, and everyone has the potential to cause real harm to innocents. Do the community a favor and consult the people who see the big picture: staff.

Posting publicly will either cause an innocent to get hurt, or give a guilty suspect advance warning of what information we have. Give us a chance to consider the evidence's security implications for the entire community, rather than recklessly releasing potentially damning information into LE's hands.

Do not forget that we are all suspects in LE's eyes. If we find this attacker by unintentionally releasing valuable information to LE, we have all failed.

2. It is never appropriate to break someone's anonymity. There is a worrying pro-doxxing culture developing here. We have a zero tolerance policy for this. Posts will be edited, users will be banned. This community will NOT be known for violence. Doxxing only causes harm. If you are in the rare position of holding personal details about anyone involved with SR1 or SR2, releasing it will only cause loss of innocent life and unspeakable collateral damage to the community.

3. I will not be blackmailed. I will not hire hitmen. I cannot and will not pay vendors to stay here. If you hired a hitman against me, you're brilliant. Hire more, it's in the community's best interest. It is better for me to be murdered by you than to be captured by our oppressive governments. Keep me sharp. Give me incentives to maintain my OPSEC.

4. Hiniguel's posts are very disappointing. He has not responded to any personal messages for days, so I am in the uncomfortable position of publicly condemning someone I respect. I will reiterate that no current or former staff, including DPR2, were in any way involved with this attack. All evidence points otherwise. Any allegations as to who uses the DPR account are off-point and do not serve to unite or protect this community.

5. Mix your coins. We arein a difficult position. One of our hardest decisions last week was to release the BTC addresses involved with the attack. This was a compromise for anonymity, but we were backed into a corner. I do not believe the community would even remotely trust us today had we not offered this transparency. I regret the compromise of our collective blockchain anonymity, and encourage you to proactively mix all coins received from Silk Road.

Investigation Progress

It would be much easier for me if I could release all evidence I receive. It would allow my true dedication to be obvious, and for everyone to collaborate on capturing this attacker. I wish I could release why I know for a fact that it is physically impossible for any current or former staff member to have held insider information and enabled this attack. Transparency would make my life way easier, but make all of our lives much more dangerous.

I keep tight lips for a reason, and wish my lips could stay even tighter.

Im all for Silk 2.0 even with the recent events. What I can't be on board with is no escrow, what so ever . That service saved me money a few key times . If we don't have escrow, we need harsher rules for scammers or bigger bonds or something  !!

Plus if you scam now you won't be able to come back to SR for another 2 months(as a vendor) so I personally think that we'll be seeing less scammers with in the next few months while we have no escrow. Just my theory though but time will tell.

Agreed. That's why I've compiled a list of vendors whom have good feedback. I encourage everyone to do as much research as possible. Now is the time when that research would be nice to have in a time were SR is going to require all transactions to be finalized early.

I hope your right LuLu. It would make sense to stop new vendors signing up until scammers are taken care of.

Maybe we should get a thread going where people can post who they have been scammed by, that way the mods have much less work to do and could just focus on banning them.

This is going to be a scammers paradise otherwise. What's to say that some of the reliable vendors turn rogue because they are on agora now? Very high possibility of that happening too.

I wouldn't dare risk my coins buying from a new vendor WITHOUT escrow.
I'll only use FE with my trusted vendors (and I guess most of the community will do the same) - sadly, this leave pretty much no place for new vendors to get in the game.

Why is doesn't matter who took the coin or if Defcon is telling the truth:

There are lots of users of this and other markets who are blaming Defcon\DPR2\whatever the guy wants to call himself for the theft of such a fortune in BTC from SR2. I, myself, believe that all the evidence I am privy to points to, at the very least, someone in a position of leadership and power within SR2. Not necessarily the top dog, that may not be the case at all. I can't say for 100% that Defcon and DPR2 are the same person, though I suspect it. I certainly can't even prove that the person posting as Defcon is the same person who has always held that task. Nor can I know for certain that this person is an actual SR2 staff member. If LE managed to capture a server and break it's security, damn near anything is possible. But I can tell you this for sure:

As long as SRx is out in front, the leader in sheer numbers, security will be broken. All men are succeptable to one of two things, fear or greed. When there is a way for fortunes to be stolen, greedy men will find that way, whether it means misusing their own power, or by manipulating those in power through fear or greed. BTC is electronic. There are always ways through security when it is only ones and zeros. All those zeros have holes, you know. They line up like tunnels through the code. When one tunnel is blocked, they set to work on a new one. The code is always changing, after all, isn't it?

So spread out. Those who, like me, choose to leave SR forever and keep to the shadows will be doing any future SR a service. Mark my words, escrow will return to SR. Yes, and people will be dumb enough to use it. And if SR is so big that there are millions of dollars worth of BTC in the escrow at any time, I assure you, men will find a way to steal it. Buyer and seller beware.

Can someone please explain to me how the esrow situation will be handled? I didn't have much in my wallet, however I had a few pending orders from known scammers and one that I'm sure not sure of yet.

1. Will all escrow coins from orders with vendors, that either have already been banned e.g. WhiteDreams, or will soon be banned, e.g. OTBS, simply be transferred to my account balance without me having to do anything?

2. What about orders (that obviously never arrived) from vendors that some say are scammers and some say are trustworthy, so called 'selective-scammers'? I guess that would be a case to be disputed...?

As I said above they have the intentions to crack down on scammers. During the time period with out escrow and no vend reg then it will be harder for people to scam as that will get there account banned. No more new vendors will be aloud to register so it will be harder for new vendors to arise and turn scam.

SR should be send these coins to the vendor. Keep the proof that you received the product though so SR will know where to send these coins.

Conspiracy theories only distract from narco93's investigation. If you want to throw fuel into a lynch mob throw it into narco's lynch mob. Don't start a new riot on zero evidence, and don't post evidence publicly without consulting staff. There are many angry people here, and everyone has the potential to cause real harm to innocents. Do the community a favor and consult the people who see the big picture: staff.

Posting publicly will either cause an innocent to get hurt, or give a guilty suspect advance warning of what information we have. Give us a chance to consider the evidence's security implications for the entire community, rather than recklessly releasing potentially damning information into LE's hands.

Do not forget that we are all suspects in LE's eyes. If we find this attacker by unintentionally releasing valuable information to LE, we have all failed.

2. It is never appropriate to break someone's anonymity. There is a worrying pro-doxxing culture developing here. We have a zero tolerance policy for this. Posts will be edited, users will be banned. This community will NOT be known for violence. Doxxing only causes harm. If you are in the rare position of holding personal details about anyone involved with SR1 or SR2, releasing it will only cause loss of innocent life and unspeakable collateral damage to the community.

3. I will not be blackmailed. I will not hire hitmen. I cannot and will not pay vendors to stay here. If you hired a hitman against me, you're brilliant. Hire more, it's in the community's best interest. It is better for me to be murdered by you than to be captured by our oppressive governments. Keep me sharp. Give me incentives to maintain my OPSEC.

4. Hiniguel's posts are very disappointing. He has not responded to any personal messages for days, so I am in the uncomfortable position of publicly condemning someone I respect. I will reiterate that no current or former staff, including DPR2, were in any way involved with this attack. All evidence points otherwise. Any allegations as to who uses the DPR account are off-point and do not serve to unite or protect this community.

5. Mix your coins. We arein a difficult position. One of our hardest decisions last week was to release the BTC addresses involved with the attack. This was a compromise for anonymity, but we were backed into a corner. I do not believe the community would even remotely trust us today had we not offered this transparency. I regret the compromise of our collective blockchain anonymity, and encourage you to proactively mix all coins received from Silk Road.

Investigation Progress

It would be much easier for me if I could release all evidence I receive. It would allow my true dedication to be obvious, and for everyone to collaborate on capturing this attacker. I wish I could release why I know for a fact that it is physically impossible for any current or former staff member to have held insider information and enabled this attack. Transparency would make my life way easier, but make all of our lives much more dangerous.

You should still become a vendor then. As for gaining trust I would recommend getting more active in the forums. Give give aways and samples will help your business a great deal. Start very small and gain the SR user bases trust over time.

It will do nothing of the sort. It isn't even remotely that relevant.  Just like when it got hacked, BTC wasn't dented for the better or worse.. and even when it was brought to its knees in October, it only dipped for 3 days before rebounding.  The bitcoin market has become what it is because of speculators.. few of which are buying drugs on the darknet.

That is true. I am in IT myself. The last commercial server upgrade I was a part of, the client was told 2-4 hours. It was 8 hours before they were 100% up. I think its funny.

SR being hacked was literally just the straw that broke the camels back, and the massive flood of news stories about it didn't help. It wasn't the sole cause of the price of btc crashing. Prime example: Did DPR2 running off with the cold storage coins cause the price of btc to plummet while no other news was circulating? I'm pretty sure it didn't (not positive tho and too lazy to check). Plus the amount of news stories that will be published when SR comes back online is going to be a fraction of what was published when it was hacked, because that is a much less juicy story.

Anyway I think if anything SR coming back online might give it a tiny bump up, but the overall trend of the market is still bearish and SR isn't going to change that.

No I wouldn't want that.  Here is a concept everyone should know.  UNDERpromise and OVERdeliver.  What Defcon has done from inception is the exact opposite.. he throws out roadmaps he can't possibly deliver on and then he gets crucified for it.  He should have come out and said the site would go live at 20:00 a WEEK from now and then guess what?  IF it actually went live between now and then everyone would be blowing their proverbial load at the overachievement.

It's become comedy because literally not one single release has been on time.. so I'm not dissing him on that alone, I'm saying learn from your mistakes and stop promising what you never can deliver.. just exaggerate the damn go live to give yourself a RUNWAY instead of this, "ok everything will be back to normal in 18 hours" nonsense.

Completely agree he should underpromise especially when dealing with the people of SR (a very impatient, hateful, and self-righteous group). The fact is he was probably excited to get it up just like we all are because he has worked on it for so long that he wanted people to be excited with him but he didn't realize at the same time he'd run into problems. pending escrow is good for you if you received your package and bad for your supplier, they say "pending" because they want you to believe you will be reimbursed in 2024. Good luck on that one. I had initially understood that it was only ecrows that got stolen but there are a lot of zero's here. Happy that I wasn't stupid enough to use SR as a wallet. But feel for the people that did. Anyway, my tiny amount multiplied but a thousand users makes it a disgrace full stop. I sure won't be depositing any time soon. Sorry about that. I only work with people who know what they are doing.

The micro amount of coins I had before the crash were transferred out and my .3BTC was transferred in. Final balance shows 0.3 BTC but SR shows 0. This is NOT okay. Defcon said all the coins transferred after the attack WILL be there. Where are they?

I had initially understood that it was only ecrows that got stolen but there are a lot of zero's here. Happy that I wasn't stupid enough to use SR as a wallet. But feel for the people that did. I believe in the Silk Road staff as they have showed there loyalty to us by returning the cold storage wallet, the immense amount of work required to run SR, the fact they're giving us liberty, and putting a flat 5% on all transactions in order to pay everyone back. That's my reason to think that. I believe in the SR staff.

I dont see why the transactions have to stay there anyhow. When everything is all said and done why cant we delete our transaction logs? Wouldnt that help keep us safe as well? And I can delete my message but not the whole thing the vendor has to? That dont make much sense to me. That should be fixed to imo. As for the whole issue with everything and Defcon I think everyone is innocent until proven guilty (or maybe thats my trusting nature who knows). I say we wait and see if payments are paid back to those who lost. Sometimes you have to have faith. Expect the worst and hope for the best. I got faith.

When I first logged in I was relieved to find that I only had a relatively small amount of BTC in "Pending Balance/Escrow" but then a trusted vendor cancelled an order that I had thought was already on its way and to my dismay this amount increased significantly. And now I am worried that when I am able to access these funds they will have depreciated significantly.

The other thing that irritates me somewhat is that there seems to have been little to no visible action taken against some of the known scammers whose listings are still up and who are (presumably) still profiting from the unwary.

I am now going to be a loudmouth (but hopefully not of the kind I deplore) and repeat ideas that I have already posted in other threads, but only because they are fucking brilliant.

Anyhoo, the following is an idea that I have been suggesting for some time now, (at least since Valentine's Day), because I feel very, very strongly that it would be an effective and efficient means to recover the credibility of Silk Road, and help to defeat scammers and possible scammers.

Although I had really hoped that SR might consider to give it some official sanction - ie, to publish "official" type reviews of vendors and actually have the ability to recommend and enforce the de-registration or banning of fraudsters, this is definitely something we can do.

Do not a large majority of forum members give full, detailed reviews after every purchase?

Do not those who get scammed often raise awareness to others and get the ball rolling, only to be ignored by staff?

Coins sitting in two buying accounts I have were taken and there is no word of these funds being re payed like the coins that were in Escrow...
