The man known to many as Ross Ulbricht was actually an employee of mine. I had instructed him to perform some routine intel gathering on some FBI and DEA pests that had been bothering me for some time. Unfortunately, Ulbricht failed me, and as we all know, Mr.X allows no margin of error.
Instead of executing this lackey, as I do to all who fail me, I decided to show a rare, merciful side. I messaged the Dread Pirate and informed him of my master plan to use Ulbricht as a sacrifice, so that Roberts and co. could migrate to a new, secure location.
You see, I had become aware that the world governments were closing in on the identities of some key players involved in the creation and maintenance of SR (including DPR). It is beneficial to me that Law Enforcement be focused on DPR and his petty operation as long as possible. While they are distracted, I will build my true empire right under their noses, and when they least expect it, I will strike. Until that day comes, I will allow the Silk Road administrators to continue operating this site. A word of warning, however: be careful not to outlive your usefulness too soon...
