I've been trying all morning to get on, anyone know what's going on?

Yep its down for me too. In the last few weeks its been super fast. Today is the worst possible day for it to be down for me. I just got my inventory in and I need to fill and ship my orders UGH!!!

So the server went down unexpectedly today. This was very unnerving because we thought it had somehow been seized or something terrible like that. Fortunately it was just some kind of glitch and we were able to reboot. Everything has been backed up and is totally current, but we are not going to turn the site back on for a couple of days while we work out a way to prevent such problems. We are terribly sorry for this inconvenience, but we want to provide the best service possible, and random outages just aren't going to cut it. We know it must be terribly frustrating, but we are taking the better-safe-than-sorry approach and we hope you understand.

I'm amazed at how stupid some people are^^ Don't worry about SR, it will come back up relatively soon when DPR is good and ready. You can use warweed's site to check it SR is up or down at the moment. There is no need for threads like this every week.

Yes that is a very old message, I remember that outage and all the speculation that came with it.
There have been many, many outages, most lasting a short period. Don't worry, give it some time, before you know it you'll be buying drugs online once more.
In fairness they should remove the old message on silkroadmarket.org so people don't assume it's related to current downtime.

Regardless, I was a little worried because I *just* made my first purchase, and I'm hoping that I'll be able to release the funds on time; I don't want to screw the vendor!
I wouldn't trust any "message" about the state of the road without a date and gpg sig. It would be nice if that silkroadmarket.org site was used in emergencies.

that message on www.silkroad.org or wot ever it is has been there since the dawn of silkroad time, think its just something sr admin had in place when the site was young and law enforcement may have been searching for the site on the normal web, so its been there for well over a year.......

Running a clandestine blackmarket server is obviously different than running Ubercart on a clearnet site where you can just use scripts and phone notification to let you know if anything happens. Can't do that here obviously so I expect SR to go down sometimes while waiting for a console reboot or whatever the problem is. Tor was never meant for such a high traffic site there is no doubt a lot of strain keeping all the encrypted connections open but they usually load balance it quite well here.
I'm assuming they have a dedicated server somewhere nested behind the standard hardware firewalls and DMZ running a tor hidden service behind their own guard nodes, and need some time to ssh or console access, and not that DPR just woke up and accidentally tripped over the power cord blacking out the server sitting on his living room floor

thats quite a funny thought DPR getting up and accidentally kicking the power cord out of a server sitting in his living room, it does make me wonder how far away from the truth you are there lol :)

There was once a well known crime forum the guy had set up by breaking into Affinity net in Florida and creating his own VPS to host it. He configured it so it would drop all pings and attempts to trace, also had a DDOS shield on it so all connections went through an encrypted tunnel somewhere else before hitting the server.. took their admins forever to manually search every server for it to shut it down.
If you lived in Europe or Asia with cheap fiber access you could easily plunk a rack on your floor and spawn a few multiple VPS to act as guard nodes and a hidden service. I hope this isn't case though they'll obviously never say
