Title: Is this how PGP works?
Post by: ld533 on March 20, 2012, 11:33 am
Hi guys,
I'm a new user. Not the most tech savvy but I'm a willing learner and trying to take in as much info as I can to learn how to use SR safely. I'm just getting in to learning how to use GNU to send and receive encrypted PGP messages. The tutorials are a little confusing, I've tried my best to follow however I have some questions or clarifications to ask.

Just wondering how PGP works, this is how I see it:

When I want to send a message to YOU:
1. You give me your encrypted key.
2. I save that as a text document with your name
3. Import that document to my keys
4. Type a message in Clipboard, hit Encrypt and select YOUR key from the list.
5. Send that scrambled message to you.
6. When you receive it, you place it in your clipboard, hit decrypt and enter your unencrypted key which only YOU know.
7. It decrypts it and the unencrypted message shows for you.

When you want to send a message to me:
1. I message you my encrypted key.
2. You save that and import it to your keys
3. You type a message and encrypt it with my encrypted key
4. You send that message to me and I place it in my Clipboard, hit Decrypt and enter my unencrypted key
5. it shows your message

I think I only fully understood that by typing it out. Is that correct?

Another quick question, I was told to order 5 books from warweed to get a buying history. I bought those 5 books, didn't know if I should provide an address so I just sent my tormail address unencrypted. Those books are still processing, I've heard that warweed is run by a bot which auto-processes them, did I do something wrong and it's not processing mine or am I supposed to wait?

One more question, when buying from a vendor, I'm going to be encrypting my address using THEIR key and pasting that into the address box right?

Sorry for the newb questions! I've tried my best to extract this information from tutorials and other topics however I like to be better safe than sorry and get it right the first time!

Pretty much right, except that when decrypting you only have to enter the password to the private half of the key pair used for encryption, not the key itself.
Buying ebooks in order to build up a buying history may or may not work as a vendor will probably check what you have bought in the past and see.
The buying history provides a level of protection for a vendor by seeing that you have previously placed successful orders for a decent value with a variety of vendors, it basically tells the vendor how well you can be trusted.
If you have five orders for 0.5 BTC each all from the same guy in a short time frame it basically tells the vendor nothing about your buying stats and whether you are likely to try and rip them off when they send you your 50BTC drugs order.

I don't understand this.. can you explain a little more?

Regarding the ebooks: Ah ok.. I'm not planning on making any large purchases, just small amounts. I'm more concerned about the fact that processing is supposed to be done in 2 minutes from warweed however it's been a few hours already with no change.

Imagine I send you an encrypted message.
You copy it from the email/IM/whatever and paste it into the clipboard of your PGP
You click Decrypt and it will ask you for the password relating to your key (you were asked for a password when you created the key pair)
You type this in and it decrypts it for you.

Ah thank you.

One more question, how much should I order at a time?
Planning on buying a few small things, should I wait in between orders?

I try to never have enough in the mail at any one time to get me anything more than a possession charge if it was all intercepted.
For instance if you order 1g coke and it gets found (very unlikely but bear with me) and you have also ordered 10g MDMA, 100 LSD and 7g bud from seperate sellers at the same time then you can guarantee that the feds will intercept them as well and you would probably get hit for drug trafficking and possession with intent to supply.
If you order the 1g and it gets caught but you have not ordered anything else then you will probably only get a possession charge and be in less trouble.
