Title: New user, just a question or two.
Post by: sundaydriver on February 09, 2012, 05:21 pm
Hi, I have very recently got tor and discovered the silk road, and I am interested in making a purchase, and I was wondering if anyone could give me  a few pointers.

First of all, if I click on the vendor's offer, it has a table at the bottom of the page, is this other user's feedback telling me that they were happy with their purchases?

Also, I just wanted to make sure that I have done everything properly.

1. I downloaded Tor and fired it up
2. Went onto SR and made an account etc.
3. I just downloaded bitcoin client and it is doing some "synchronizing with network" thing at the bottom of the window (Not really sure how to use this yet, do I just buy bitcoins with really money?
4. Once I have enough bitcoins I can click 'add to cart'

Have I missed anything vital out in my steps? Any chance of running into problems? (mainly worried about legal issues, the money isn't too much of a worry)

Any response would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance!

You can get bitcoins several ways, www.bitcoin.it . Look for vendors on the forum and on the market check feedback.. seems legit? http://warweedoeg6lfyoz.onion/search/

Sounds like you have it down. I buy bitcoins at the bank with cash as it seems like the most anonymous way to do it, only evidence that I bought the coins is the footage from the security cameras. You can acquire an invoice and find out which bank to go to at the bitinstant website. They will also explain how you will receive the bitcoins and what kind of acccount you will have to make. Also, I have a program called ccleaner that I run before and after I use TOR. Might not do much but it makes me feel a bit better after being on this website.

I just run it on its default settings. Apparantly it removes every trace of your being on the internet from the computer. I'm not incredibly tech savy so I don't know how/how well it works. I was on 4chan looking at a deepweb thread and someone posted an image with a bunch of different stuff you can do to be safe on SR/the deep web and Ccleaner was one of the things on the list. I'd link it for you guys but I'm not sure where it came from and I'm sure the 4chan image link is long dead.

There might be some in here if you care to read through the thread...no garuntees.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but please throw out everything you think you know about security and research it by reading papers from people who know what they're talking about. The information is out there, and if you continue trying to learn through trial and error, you will end up in prison before you end up secure.

Well it can't hurt to run the program can it? And I never said that was my sole source of security...if you've got any tips for us noobs please don't hold back, I'm all ears. But telling me I'm wrong and I need to go read 'research papers' certainly doesn't help me or anyone else looking for help to become safer.

yeah that was a really unhelpful reply by me in retrospect. From what I gathered from your post you are just running Tor on your rig by itself, possibly as part of the Tor browser bundle. I can't even begin to wrap my head around the number of ways this is bad, so I'll spare you the boring details and suggest that you use a live usb solution like liberte or a fully encrypted usb drive with the browser bundle on it at a minimum (both have their own problems, but perfect is the enemy of good and all that). There are threads on how to to do this kind of stuff in the security section, this one by a member named "v01d" -- http://4eiruntyxxbgfv7o.onion/paste/show.php?id=fcc21f55e8225274&plaintext=1 -- is geared towards newbies.

Yeah I've been trying to boot to a USB with Liberte...I've got it installed and changed my boot priority but that damn OS won't start when I boot from the USB key...anyway I'll get it figured out I didn't realize it was that bad to be on here just running TOR from my rig, will definitely change my ways like right now, thanks for the info man.

Huh. Now I feel stupid.

I'm pretty much doing the same thing, and I have no way to use a Linux system. I guess I just assumed I was secure if I closed down all network traffic with Tor open and used the bundle on the highest security settings, which I customized after reading some documentation. You read all sorts of opinions on the forums about what's okay and what isn't, and I thought I had done my homework. Well, time to look into this, I assume.
