Looking at warweed's search function, I see there are at least 150k users, is that possible?

150k accounts, probably not 150k active users.

184489 users certainly not all active certainly not all unique but thats how many users there are signed up on sr not including the users SR deleted in the earlyer days that were sql injection attempts

I still find this pretty amazing stuff.
Did you by any chance record the data for the increase in numbers over time? It'd be interesting to graph the growth. I've a feeling that we haven't come close to plateauing yet.

I find this kind of strange...
User #
12241 : ninjaman
50425 : ninjaman1
59271 : ninjaman393
128117 : ninjaman28
185208 : ninjamandude
I searched my own name just out of curiosity. I am #12241. When I created my account, way back when, I just used a completely random name that happened to pop into my head.
What are the odds that 5 other users also thought to use 'ninjaman'?
Am I crazy? If I had to guess, there is only ~1k active users on Silk Road, maybe a little more. Is there any reason that a mass amount of 'dummy' accounts would be made?

ninjaman isn't TOO unlikely a name to think up - especially not when 10's of thousands of people are coming up with names.
I'm willing to bet 90% of these accounts aren't used, they were created by someone curious, who looked around SR a bit, but didn't buy and didn't return to it. That was originally my purpose - I created an account so I could see marketplace, was awestruck by the selection and prices, and started using it.
Additionally, scammers / spammers - and considering that some vendors refuse new customers with a high user #, low-number buyer accounts might be worth something - to make you look like you were with SR from the beginning.

When I signed up, I made two accounts, because I was a stupid n00b and accidentally forgot the password to my original account. :P
...but wow! 150k users - we must be the fastest growing organisation in the world! :D

Yea, it's crazy. When I joined during the last week of June '11, right when it was just hitting mainstream news, I thought I was late to the party. Who knew it would keep growing this much.
I didn't log in October-January and couldn't believe how it was coming along when I came back.

I think it is safe to assume 10% are active. So 15,000 active seems like a better guess than 1,000 to me.

Would you rather have that or all this information in some company's logs? Not sure that's how it works, because I'm not an IT guy, but that would seem to be the way it would work.

If you could create some kind of decentralized BitTorrent like 'tor2web' application, and also a way to automatically convert credit card funds to Bitcoin, launder them etc, all completely anonymously and automatically, then the 'education' barrier to the Silk Road would be completely gone.
Then we'd have facebook like numbers on here...
On second thought that would be grim, delete this post moderators! :D

Well, we don't want it to get so popular that it goes the way of megaupload. Keep that in mind.
-
sr has changed the way it's uid's are setup now the prior method of a regular uid is no longer valid there is a way but im not telling :P

It's not exactly rocket science.

The Facebook access would surely suck. However if it was easier and safer to get BTC well that would be wonderful. but you cant have one without the other? or so it would seem
