What was a video game that really freaked you out?
For me Silent Hill made me piss my pants the first time I played it! But in my opinion the scariest game I've ever played is a little game for PlayStation called Clock Tower. Currently playing it on an emulator. ;D
-
Resident Evil 2 when I was younger. It seems silly now, but that shit scared the fuck out of me as a kid.
-
Haha yeah RE3 used to scare me whenever nemesis came around. ;D
Here's a trailer from the Clock Tower game. Pretty cheap now but when I think about it the game was pretty demented for it's time (satanic occultism, graphic murder and violence, high tension, etc...). ;D

Original Resident Evil spooked me good. It was the surprise factor, lack of ammunition and generally being helpless against slow moving zombies. Talk about anxiety! My heart rate would skyrocket. After several marathon gaming sessions, I would dream about it - Nightmares!!! Crazy stuff. RE really was a ground breaking game. Created a new genre of video game.
I had a similar psychological response to Dead Space. I could barely look at the TV screen!!

Yes, me too. I finished in a record time of 58 minutes once due to the sheer fear of those zombie's arms reaching out from between those boards!

I just hated being chased by MR. X or Birkin. Birkin's 2nd form always freaked me out. ;D
-
How has no one mentioned Doom yet?
-
Silent HIll 2 scared the living shit out of me
-
Does the scary maze game count? I'm ashamed admit this, but I screamed like a girl when someone tricked me in to playing that.
-
Silent Hill for sure.
My buddy had it back in the day with a big old TV in the totally dark basement.
I WATCHED the whole game as if it were a movie. Use to freak the hell out of me. Enjoyed every second of it.

I've never played a "scary" video game. But the maze game was a fun joke. There was also something similar where it looked like a car commercial..until the end.

Playing a giant stick of Tofu on the run from hordes of vegan zombies... it doesn't get much better than this :-)

Out of all the Resident Evils, it's gotta be RE3, Nemesis constantly stalking you, never felt secured.

I agree, the Youtube videos that show peoples reaction to it are priceless.. As a whole, games don't scare me. Frustrate me yes, I'm currently playing Midnight Club Los Angeles... its frustrating to say the least.
Only one film has ever scared me, its called 'The Eye'. I picked it up thinking 'great Jessica Alba is in this', but fuck me, its scary.

Play Clock tower for playstation. It's a point and click game where the object is to find clues in a scenario and escape while being chased by a killer wielding a giant pair of scissors. Certain parts can still make me jump to this day. I advise anyone who don't think a video game can still scare em to give it a shot. ;D
-
Oh, the monotony of Clock Tower.
Such a fucked up and twisted game.
Got pretty heart racing as well. :P
Good nostalgia.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein
-
Silent hill 2 and the remake of resident evil both scared me, well the latter just creeped me out.
I miss those survival horror games they don't seem to make them much anymore now its all point and shoot horror
-
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Shit was definitely crunk.. I wouldn't say scary though. :P
@Flicky42.
YAH! They used to care so much about the story lines of games and just the gore detail... now everything is point, shoot, and drool.
Really annoying and depressing.
I have centered myself around FPS' and MMO's.
-
Def silent hill back in the day! Doom wasn't so much scary as it was edge of your seat but still the all time best game ever! More recently tho Deadspace for ps3! that shit's just fucked up! Bugs me out so much that i never finished it
-
Did anybody play Limbo? It's an indie game. It was wierd AND creepy.
-
Falling asleep..
-
Altered Beast haha I particularly remember an eye that fucked me up
-
Dead Space @ 2am high as fuck, woke up several neighbors lol, almost shit myself ::)
But anyone ever play amnesia or fatal frame? Both of those games are creepy as FUCK
-
Slender. As soon as you think the game isn't that scary and you let your guard down, shit catches you off guard and you can't help but yell.

Just read the wiki for clock tower, quite the fucked up game I gotta say, cool how there's like 10 different endings though

Yeah it really is. Its sorta made out like a movie so some aspects of game play are slow along with minor translation issues. But the whole story is awesome. I just downloaded a psx emulator and the ios file and had flashbacks. Even the very first one for snes was fucked up too.
Oh, the monotony of Clock Tower.

Yep It still can get ya at certain parts too! Remember the library with the woman's head impaled in the bookcase? Should've never clicked on that shit.
-
Lol I <3 my PS2 w/ freemcboot, hd loader too :3 can run the iso's off flashdrives or just burn em to DVD's like normal :D
-
Ahh yes i miss my modded PS2. Sold it for $200 then bought the PS3. Looking back I wish I never had done that.

The first Silent Hill and The Suffering... you could hear those guys crawling on the ceiling and scraping their blades across the walls. And that scene in Silent Hill where you went in the bathroom and snagged the shotgun from the dead body, come back outside and everything went all red... walls melted and those creepy little burning kids.
-
Oh man, I remember Resident Evil 4 scaring the CRAP out of me in the first level. I didn't really know what to expect from the game, but there was much screaming in my house that day. Also the game DOOM, when I first played it as a 6 year old, gave me nightmares. I do not claim to be a brave girl. Better then my sister though, who despite being older then me was very scared of Metroid Prime.
-
Splatterhouse for TurboGrafx-16
:-P
Traumatized my childhood and made me what I am today. ;D
-
Ahh yes i miss my modded PS2. Sold it for $200 then bought the PS3. Looking back I wish I never had done that.
I almost wish I _DID_ do that!
But I love playing pokemon roms on mine ::)

It's stupid how I still enjoy those games! ;D

my ps3 is backwards compatible... and my ps3 plays ps2 and ps1 games.
i went on a binge and bought pretty much every ps1 rpg you can think of.. a long with chrono trigger on the SNES like twice.. and any and every SNES rpg you can think of.

Anyone ever play Fatal Frame? I could only play in daylight, I can't even imagine playing while high on something :o

ahaha.. was it that bad for you??
-comforts-
-
How has no one mentioned Doom yet?
Hah, Doom definately scared me along with RE 2 for the first games to make me jump and creep me out. Max Payne kind of made me feel uneasy at times. Then they got progressive
You had system shock, condemned origins, and fucking fatal frame 2. Japanese horror always knows how to creep the hell out of people.
-
the persona series was like a cheesy horror-type.
it was pretty cool.
and doom was not scary... LOL.
yoshi's island was WAY MORE scary.
-
RE, RE2, Silent Hill 2 for PS1. And Eternal Darkness for Game Cube.
-
Anyone ever play Fatal Frame? I could only play in daylight, I can't even imagine playing while high on something :o
That shit will make you shit yourself, litterally lol
and b0lixtrader - isnt that the one where the game fucks with you, saying your memory card is corrupted and shit, puts bugs on the screen, etc etc?
-
The original Silent Hill was(is) scary as hell. Also: Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem was another scary game. So much freaking the hell out.
-
I dont know if this has already been mentioned but Resident Evil (the original) scared the fuck out of me.
Especially in the first stages of the game where you walk into a corridor with not one, but TWO fucking huge tarantulas!!.
-

Haha yes! You have sane meter and when it hits insanity level all kinds of fucked up shit happens. When I first played the worst one was a sudden image of a dead girl in a bloody bath tub.
-
Whenever the Flood or Brutes charge at me in Halo, I freak the fuck out. Do NOT fight the Flood on LSD. They come out of the television and enter your soul. That was a bad trip...
They scare me sober too and I'm a grown man. Oh well.
-
Does anyone else like to play scary games and watch horror movies while high? I dont know I guess it just helps me feel scared more... when I'm sober I just feel kind of desensitized
-
silent hill and Doom 3 were both pretty creepy.
playing Resident evil 5 tripping sack was a bad idea
-
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. awesome game. Much more atmosphere than some tripe nowadays. There are parts that will soil your panties. The atmosphere is unmatchable.
-
I love playing scary and watching scary/gory movies while high on weed. It is just more fun that way.
F.E.A.R 1,2,3 had parts that made you jump a little but not scary. Doom series eh not that scary, creepy but not scary. Half-Life 1&2 were more scary than Doom 1,2,3 in my opinion.
RE 1,2 and Silent Hill 2 will be the best survival horror games I have played.
RE4&5 were just fun shooting games, and I am hoping to god RE6 will be good!
-
Play the game LSD:Dream emulator on the PS1. Turn all the lights off and either put in headphones, or turn the volume up. There is nothing left to do except get creeped the fuck out. I recommend everybody here to do this exact thing and post here if you did it.. It is truly.. creepy.
-
I played Dead Space after being up a couple days from having taken a little too much Adderall, and I was so jumpy and anxious that I don't know how I ever finished. I also agree with the others about Silent Hill. When I was in college, one of my roommates played that and it was so interesting that we watched it like it was a movie.

There is nothing better than nostalgic memory of you and your buddies playing games together from kids to adults. Its one of the best bonding moments. Some of my favorite child hood memories are playing games with my friends for hours, because back then that was our drug.

yah, good point. nostalgia is always cool until you start remembering that those friends turned into either
a. alcoholics.
b. pill heads.
c. coke heads(who evolved into crack heads via level 99)
d. thieves. petty fiend, thieves.
PEWPEW.

calm down.. i do, personally, think all stimulants are WHACK.
and i have seen a friend or two get completely whacked out on coke.. then turn to crack.
it's a shitty thing to watch and just to wonder how their parents feel.. especially when they are going bankrupt giving you all of the money they modern day slave for. =/
then again, i do know there are people out there who know how to use their drugs in moderation, but what will it turn to eventually?
especially using such a controlling/addictive drug. :D
just throwing facts out there and dropping off my opinion... no need to rage on me..
sounds like you love your uppers a little too much!
remember.. we're on the same team!
-
Haha wow if that's going off than I wonder what I'm like when I'm pissed. I was just merely stating that just because some people who use do whack ass shit doesn't mean everyone does. Everybody handles their stuff differently. Also doesn't mean I'm sitting here chopping up lines or fiening for another twenty either. It's not really that hard to separate your responsibilities from your partying. ;D
-
haha..
yah.. but you'd be surprised how hard it is for some people to distinguish between the 2! :)
i know you've met a few of those "productive alcoholics".. haha.
there is NO productive crack head.. they eventually turn into a demon.
i love you, whoever you are. :)
i think you're awesome for ranting and raaaaaaaaving! maybe even raaaaaging! <3
-
WOAH.
Talk about getting way off topic....... ;)

Does anyone remember that old NES game called "Gatekeeper" or something similar?
I remember when I was younger I played that game a TON, but when you die, this "scary" skull comes up and laughs at you.
I HATED that motherfucker.
-
Slender. As soon as you think the game isn't that scary and you let your guard down, shit catches you off guard and you can't help but yell.
Agree 100% it is even worse if you play at night with the lights off.
The game is free and you can get it for pc or mac. http://www.parsecproductions.net/slender/
Slender Man mythos based web series Marble Hornets can be found on youtube.
All scary stuff.

bomberman was pretty scary..

Resident Evil 2 when I was younger. It seems silly now, but that shit scared the fuck out of me as a kid.
I came here to post this. When you're in the gun store in the beginning and the zombies break the window and eat the guy, I nearly shit myself.
-
The first max payne had some parts that scared me when i was younger
-
Wolfenstein 3D ... mind you I was about 10 when it came out, scared the shite out of me!
-
Does anyone remember the Aliens Trilogy when it came out on Playstation 1?.
That scared the shit out of me playing it in the dark.
-
Amnesia, it's a computer game but it's fucking scary. You have to run and hide from these fucking jaw-dropped boogie man burlap sack mother fuckers, all while trying to find your way out of this scary castle using clues and items you find. There are some funny youtube videos of people freaking the fuck out while playing it. Just search "amnesia reactions" on youtube and u will see what I mean.

Havent gone back and read the posts before me, my bad...
but if it hasnt been said before the original resident evil when the dogs jump through the window in the hallway.
Also you should edit your title and correctly spell scared instead of sacred... too totally different meanings to those words.
-
This is the Silk Road mate, i dont think anyone cares about spelling, grammar or punctuation!.
This is where we come to be free and chat whatever the fuck we feel like!!
-
Thasta kewl bra. Nah woories! All viedo gamez are sacred to mi.
-
LOL joey, you see what i mean? ;D
As for those dogs in the first resident evil game, that was seriously scary shit. I think what made the original games so scary and engrossing was because it was a revolution in 3d graphics.
Now, its not hard to create a game like that. I cannot believe the RE series is still on going, i was amazed when someone mentioned there will be a 6th game?? Fuck me.
-
two*
RE6 is gonna be the dope fire.
about to play the demo some.
had to buy Dragon's Dogma.. what a waste of a disc.
the demo will make it worth it.
-
Phatasmagoria
How is it that we are 6 pages into this thread and only one other person clicked it thinking of this game?! I guess its a generational thing and I am dating myself a bit, but this game is a mind fuck. I am going to look into the "Clock Tower" game that has been mentioned, but for those of you all excited about RE and Silent Hill, take a minute and wiki Phantasmagoria and Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh. Insanely creepy and scary games. With revoltingly graphic videos from back in the early days of computer video games.
-
Yeah it is definitely a generational thing.
One REALLY old game that just sprang to mind, which was a bit of a rip off of Alien, was something called Project Firestart.
Basically you were trapped on a ship and had to figure out what the fuck happened with some kind of alien genetic research program gone wrong, evading rogue aliens in the corridors and shit.
IT was back in the day when floppy disks were first appearing on the C64.
-
Just remember another scary game: Pacman. The ghosts man...they never stop chasing me no matter how far I run
-
Definitely resident evil 2 for me as well. I remember on the second play through there was the green man that would randomly burst through walls or through the ceiling, shit me up so many times but I was like 10-11 at the time.
The other resident evils and silent hills were pretty creepy at some parts and good at making you jump.
-

I just remembered about this game and was gonna post since I hadn't seen it posted... but you beat me to it. I totally agree. Fucking damn heart-racing game. The whole game isn't scary but there are certain parts that almost give you a heartattack! Including those buggers you mentioned. Also the fuckers in the water.... ;)
-
How many of you guys use emulators on your pc/laptop to play really old games???
I did it for a while just to play Manic Miner on the C64

I set my old machine up to just play old games. Kings Quest, Phantasmagoria, Heroes of Might and Magic, Police Quest. I love em! I also use old NES and SNES emulators on my laptop. It just isnt the same without a D-Pad though, I got a PS3 controller and hooked it up so I have a proper D-Pad and buttons.. SO MUCH BETTER!

Holy shit, Amnesia was scary as fuck, losing your sanity and all. And don't forget Penumbra.

Yeah i had to buy a fucking D-pad just so i could play GTA Vice city on my lappy, so glad i did though.
I have looked in the past about setting up a NES or SNES emulator. IS it that easy?? I would love to play Mario 3 and Starwing again!
-
I is quite easy. Google zSnes and RockNES X Emulator
-
Cheers for that mate!
ITs getting a bit like the big bang theory over here. Internet night, dvd night, xbox night and now retro gaming night!
Although i could very easily kill a whole weekend with retro gaming!! 8)

There's nothing wrong with nerdy sir.
-
There's nothing wrong with nerdy sir.
We must be the cool of the nerds mate. Mixing drink, drugs and smoking alongside!!.
Oh and plus one for you for making it common knowledge!! 8)
-
Just to reiterate, last night i had a hard time sleeping so i started to watch tron legacy.
Got fucking bored with that so i went for it and watched the last 20 mins of District 9.
It must be at least 50 viewings now!! At least it feels like it! 8)
-
I haven't even tried to watch Tron Legacy. I did not enjoy District 9, only watched it once.
-
You have to remember we are talking about two totally different types of movies.
Where as Tron Legacy is total sci-fi, District 9 is more of a personal message about treatment of outcasts.
-
You have to remember we are talking about two totally different types of movies.

District 9 is a sci-fi film with overtones of prejudice from what I remember. Tron Legacy (as far as I know) is a sci-fi movie with an us vs. them 1984 style theme. Or am I wrong?
Science Fiction is a genre of which both films are a part. Both films tell a different story and the writers of each have different goals with their respective stories. District 9 might well have been written to drive home the idea that prejudice is wrong. But, I feel the film was written to entertain and utilize CGI in a way that had it had not been effectively used before and used prejudice as a vessel to reach that end and pump out popcorn selling product for whatever weekend it was released. Tron I would guess was produced for the same reasons and used its predecessor's fan base as a means to improve its audience.
If you are interested in films about prejudice I would recommend "Crash" as it is better written, directed, casted, acted, and produced. Not to mention recognized for many of those attributes.
-
I have seen crash, its a great movie.
Although, your ideas about District 9 utilizing CGI in a way it has not been done before, i think is slightly off.
The use of CGI is apparent through the whole movie. It's all about power. The fact that Vickers can use alien tech while the whole of human kind cannot is the subject matter.
The fight scene at the end was a testament to the struggle that he went through as a character.
As for Tron Legacy, that was a movie based ENTIRELY on CGI. Even using it to such extent to make Jeff Bridges look younger.
They also tried to do scenes that had never been done before e.g the light cycle battle.
BUT, because the whole movie was nothing but CGI, very little story and anything else, it pretty much failed on a whole.
-
I still wont give District 9 a second watch. Meh.
-
One word: Doom! I never made it past stage1 - too scary :P
-
Ah how the hell didnt i think of DOOM!..
That was my all time fav when it came out and i clocked it from beginning to end in a matter of days.
It was a bit of a mistake though, that shit gave me serious nightmares for a while afterwards!.
-
It sounds silly but when i was younger the tigers and shit that jump out at you in Tomb Raider for PS1 scared the crap out of me lol
-
Thats the difference between retro games and the games out now.
There was playability. Even a game like Tomb Raider can add an amount of suspense.
Today, its all about the GFX.

F.E.A.R - poo your pants scary
Phantasmagoria - played it when i was like 12 y.o
Mass Effect2 - there are some scary suprises.
-
I remember seeing a trailer for a game a few years ago, where the bad guys could teleport to get close to you and then attack (no, not Doom). Scary looking/sounding trailer but I don't remember what it was called. Anyone know which one I'm on about?
And Psycho Pinball, mostly the intro bit with the laughing clown.
-
LOL clowns. My brother was scared of Clowns after he say Stephen Kings IT.
-
Alan Wake is a great game for horror movie mood and ambience.
-
Alan Wake had some scary parts, but like others said, Silent Hill definitely scared me good.
-
Left for Dead 1&2
Bets shooter
luv it when im high

Ah another one I forgot that had a weird spooky feeling on me: Flashback! (For Sega Megadrive-Genesis). Maybe it was the soundtrack coupled with some scary looking levels together with the fact that you were still trying to figure out what the hell was the hero's history all the way to the end of the game!
-
And what a classic soundtrack! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1s4qRN94Kqs
-
Does anyone remember Another World??

Left for Dead 1&2

Never played, but want to pick them up. Need a good game for 2 players. Recommended?
-
I was playing Skyrim again last night and that certainly shit the fucking life out of me!!!!!
-
I'm about to play amnesia now for the first time.. Hope its good and scary! Going to do it with all the lights off, and the volume turned up if it will have an effect. Wish me luck!
-
I am glad you stopped playing doom mate.
As a kid i suffered nightmares from playing that game too much. The further levels got a LOT more demonic and hell like, and you just felt like you were entering the ninth circle.
I was glad when i clocked it though, it really did feel like a mission, fighting for your life!!

Yeah, Fear 1 and 2. Nasty little games.
-
Never played the fear games, still worth giving a go or too outdated??
As for mass effect, it didnt so much as scare me more like gross me out a bit at some stages.
-
Silent Hill 2 :o
The Fog!!!

This may sound kinda gay but 'Black and White' freaked me out.
In the game when a villager dies a creepy voice whispers 'deeaath'. One night I was playing the game after midnight and instead of whispering 'death', it whispered my own name. I turned off the PC right away. Next day I researched the game on the forums and found out that it was programmed to look at your registry and see if the PC owner name was in a list of it's own names database.
Just so no one is worried about me, it's ok, I'm still alive.
-
I had heard a lot of good things about Amnesia, so I went and downloaded it. Everything (except some shadows and reflections, curiously) was upside down for some reason, so it's going back on my backlog.
-
Definitely Amnesia: The Dark Descent.. Occult horror..
-
Anyone remember Condemned?
Pretty cool first person shooter where instead of guns (i think there were some guns) you used pipes, wrenches, and barb wire covered baseball bats to smash up these scary running zombie/freaks in the dark with limited flashlight life. There were some pretty scary parts in that game too.

Hahahah that's a good one! Seriously some games are just too fucked up and us more so for playing them.

LSD Dream Emulator anyone? Japanese game on ps1.
I haven't played it yet but seen video of it on youtube and cunts freak the fuck out while playing it!
The story goes that the designer would have dreams and then write them down as soon as he woke up and eventually designed a game based directly on those dreams. It's hard to explain but basically you walk around and create what happens next based on what you just did. To fully understand what i mean you would have to watch the videos.
I'm currently waiting on a mate to rip the iso into a format that can be played on my psp since my attempt at running and setting up a ps1 emulator on my pc failed..

I have been playing Doom since the 90's in the online scene and quake not to much after that, still play pick up games till this day all the time. Too bad for this whole having to remain anonymous thing ;)
-
:D There is not enough players to disappear into the crowd if you were to give out your handle :D haha, really too bad.
-
RE games when i was younger.
when you were younger..... not now. you are much stronger now. you dont get scared by mere games
-
Resident Evil 2 when I was younger. It seems silly now, but that shit scared the fuck out of me as a kid.
