Title: BitCoin wallet Backup
Post by: eJ3k1 on July 16, 2012, 09:41 pm
Okay a quick question here.

Is it true that if I want to make a backup of my bitcoin wallet (on Linux), I:

- cd to ~/.bitcoin
- copy the wallet.dat file to a safe location

And then, when I want to use the backup, I just install the bitcoin wallet again and replace the wallet.dat file with my back up version?

Is that the correct way to make a backup? Are there any other things I should be aware of?

Correct!

It's also possible to keep the wallet.dat file on a USB stick and have a wallet stored there, feel free to take a look at my thread on the topic :

Thank you :-)

Personally I use the Electrum Bitcoin wallet : http://ecdsa.org/electrum/ - the advantage being it doesn't have to download the block chain but you can still have your own private key. You can write this down in case anything happens to the wallet software itself so you can retrieve your Bitcoins at any time.

I'm not sure about the security concerns about connecting to a server which is connected to the Block Chain in turn. If one of our security gurus could comment that would be much appreciated. (I should add this doesn't concern me much as I hold less than USD 500 in this wallet so it wouldn't be the end of the world if someone ran off with it...)
