I'm wondering if each exchange website does their own exchange or do they collectively list their buyers and sellers in a database?
Right now I'm using InterSango for my exchanges. When I look at the list of BTC being sold there are very few coins being sold at rates below $9USD / coin. Should I try using a different site to get a better exchange rate? Or does it not matter because they are all connecting to the same central exchange database?

Use bitinstant.com it is the most legit, easy, and you get the best rate.

You'll certainly get the best rate but be warned OP that using a Bitcoin Exchange is far from anonymous - for more info see http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=25163.0
All the best,

How do I even see the rate on bitinstant.com? I went to their fees and rates page, but all they have is fees listed and no exchange rates. I started going through the process, but it tells me how many dollars will be sent to the bitcoin address rather than how many coins.
I realize this method is technically traceable. However, I thought SR scrambled the coins anyway before they are sent to the seller. If it's impossible to tell what you purchased then how can you be charged with a crime?
