Just paid £8.90 per BTC. WTF! I remember when they were a third of that price.........it's making SR prices unviable all of a sudden....vendors need to bring down prices

Did you mean £4.90 that sounds a bit more like it?
The vendors set their prices in USD which in turn is pegged to the USD/BTC rate as per MtGox. As such it doesn't really matter if it's £4 or £8 to the Bitcoin - $100 of Bitcoins is still worth $100.
The only time that problems arise is when people buy Bitcoins, fail to spend them and the Bitcoin dips in value. The simple solution is only to buy as many BTC as you need and know in advance what you're going to order.

Anyone who bought bitcoins a few months back will have made a tidy profit.
But as stated they could go down just as easy.
Wish I could mine the things.

Does anyone think it's been affected by the recent increase in member activity? We've had a significant increase in daily members than usual this last week. :D

it has been rising steadily since i bought my first bitcoin which was now about 3 months ago
i think the price of 1 btc has been something like this:
3 months ago: 3 £
1 1/2 months ago: 3.3 £
1 month ago: 4.2 £
now: 4.8 £
as to the underlying reason why...no clue ???
