Just keep backups of your site, and never do anything with it from your real IP, always via tor (e.g. ssh).
I have carded several servers, sooner or later the owner finds out and the service gets suspended, but I can still open the same
service on a completely different one and keep the onion address at the same time,

So: regular backups, buying with some untraceable currency or just carding, no contact to the official IP.

I would pay for the server. So the only thing i'm afraid is that the hoster finds out about the illegal site on his server.

I'm wondering which hosters or from which countries they people use for hidden services. I don't think they  all can afford 200-300$ per month for a dedicated offshore server.

Don't Amazon do free EC2 servers subject to small volumes of data? Of course technically speaking there's no reason you couldn't host such a service from your own home but I wouldn't recommend it! How do you plan to differ from the Silk Road? My interest is piqued.

The host is very unlikely to find illegal content on the server, most of them will not even glance at what you are hosting unless they get abuse complaints, so unless someone finds the IP to file an abuse complaint there is a near zero chance of illegal things on your server being discovered. At least this has been my experience with hosting providers. I always host offshore on dedicated server though.

I doubt you will find much lower than $100 a month. $500 a year is more like a high end VPS than a low end dedicated server. Prices for not offshore not anonymous servers are substantially lower but $500 a year is still pretty low for dedicated.

Perhaps you can answer this kmfkewm - why is Freedom Hosting seen as the best place to host onion sites? Are they particularly obscure / reluctant to cooperate with LEO? By the time I'd come on the scene they'd been overrun and people are asking stupid prices for invite codes.

Do you think an Intel Atom processor with 1-2 gb would be enough for a small board + hidden service ? Or what should be the minimum requierement for this?

yes that would be more than enough

Because they are pretty much the only place to host onion sites, at least for a long time they were the only place offering to host sites for free. I would avoid using any hosting provider like freedom hosting and opt to host things yourself, but they have been around for a long time and they host a LOT of EXTREMELY illegal things and would likely go to prison for life if ever located, they must be taking good security precautions, but they say straight up that if they are ever compromised they will cooperate fully with law enforcement to get the best outcome for themselves as possible.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm toying with the idea of having dedicated site for my Bitcoin service so people can fill in an order form but I think I'll just enlist the help of a sympathetic fellow user with a home server who doesn't mind earning a few extra Bitcoins a month for hosting it.

All the best,
