Title: my account bitcoin address changed, and I sent money to the old one. What now?
Post by: sydbarret1977 on May 22, 2012, 01:30 pm
Hello all

I've been using a Bitcoin address associated with my SR account for some time; I had it bookmarked in my Bitcoin wallet application and on my bitcoin currency exchange provider.

I sent some bitcoins to my address this morning, after not logging in SR for some time. When I logged in, the BT address in my account had changed.

What should I do now? I have no idea how to proceed to get the Bitcoins I sent. Why did the address changed by itself?

Thanks!

I believe that the address changes after each time you use it, and I also think I read somewhere that you can still use old addresses. Maybe someone else will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.

I got it worked out! I was able to cancel it and send to the new address. (my BT exchange service had a delay in sending it that worked in my favor)
Thanks!

Just for future reference, your old addresses will still work, they are linked to your account so the BTC would have arrived whether or not you used the new or old address.

Just for future reference, I've seen a lot of similar questions asked but the following aspect has never been answered explicitly:

Can I deposit coins to old addresses that have not been used for a deposit yet and therefore are not displayed on my account page?

I've tried this:

1. Generate new address and memorize it
2. Generate new address and memorize it
3. Generate new address and memorize it
4. Only then send a deposit to each of the generated addresses
5. See if all transactions arrive

All deposits registered so the answer is probably: Yes, you can deposit to any address you've ever generated, no matter if this address has been used before. This is important because now I know that I can generate multiple fresh deposit addresses at once and use them for multi-address-withdrawals from the FOG.

Disclaimer: There may be unknown limits like address invalidation after a certain amount of time or a maximum number of current valid adresses. Only SR staff can clarify this.
