Title: Is all this "truecrypt", "liberte" stuff really neccessary?
Post by: billybob777 on May 20, 2012, 03:44 pm
All I want to buy here is a small amount of something. I read the guides on here and it sounds like a different language with all this stuff about encrypting everything on a flashdrive and running it from there. wtf? I just want to buy some stuff, not hack into the CIA.

Is there anyone on here who doesn't bother with all this encryption stuff and just straight up buys stuff?

You don't really need it, if you're just a very small customer.

I would spend just 10 minutes and learn how to use encryption for your address.

When you receive your package, know the following:

1. Never sign/Go to the post office
2. Write "return to sender" on the package and do nothing with it for a day

why, does the DEA hack into SR messages and look at whos buying what, trying to track them down?

If you need to ask this question OP, you probably shouldn't be here.

I have to agree with Limetless on this one.

Innit though Limetless!! I mean it's not too difficult to figure out how to go about encrypting your address, especially as it is for your own safety!! Be patient, take your time to learn how to use Tor, PGP/GPG and to gauge vendors to make sure you're dealing with decent guys, hover or lurk in the forums and all will become clear as day!!!!! Please for the sake of this community, a few small security measures can mean a lot!!

Yes exactly. It's not even hard to learn. When I got here I didn't know how to use GPG etc but it took me 1 evening to learn which for what it actually gives you is a very small amount of effort. If you can't be bothered to learn how to use it then you can't be bothered to look after your clients (if you are a vendor) or your own safety. If you can't be bothered to look after your own safety, you may as well just slap the handcuffs on yourself now.

I'm having quite a heated discussion on another thread with a user about this - encrypting the drive where you keep your Tor browser and GPG software is essential - it's very easy to do and you're risking your own safety if you don't.

That's all for now.

They undoubtedly try to

I would really like to know what level of protection sr uses to ensure this doesnt happen.?

Also I wonder if this has actually ever happened or has sr user info ever been compromised?

Very interesting to know and it would help us to know, to better protect ourselves....

I wouldn't worry too much, we would have heard more stories about it by now if the information had been compromised. The danger factor with using SR is either things being clocked in the post or not buying/cashing out your BTC securely. If the police are going to come after SR, that's how it will be done.

Not necessarily, they could hack into the server and skim all of the unencrypted addresses and bust all of the buyers who don't use encryption.

It's very easy to setup an encrypted Truecrypt-volume to keep some private files and programs on so why not.
Ive heard of people that supposedly had their computers seized for pretty small things, so keeping your files secretly out of reach may be a good precaution I think. Even when buying small amounts or commiting minor crimes.. never know-shit happens so why not, take ya 10 min to setup ready from the time you decide to download it.

It will basicly be a normal file you can put anywhere and disguise as anything, that you can open with the Truecrypt program and then it will ask for a password. Upon entering the correct password you get a new harddrive visible from My Computer that you can store files on. When done (or turning off the computer) you close it, and the files are stored secretly within that file.

As a minimum you could put Tor and install some programs there, and every time before you need them you just enter the password. Very easy and fast, storing all potentially incrimination things there could save some trouble. Also its very convenient to move that 1 file to another computer or such..

That way you are sure that even if others gain physical access to your computer and by-pass all other security, your stuff is safe there and noone will even know you have it.

Im just a small-time buyer myself, but are using such a Truecrypt volume as a minimum.  Now noone can tell that I have Tor, openvpn software, memo files (transaction# etc).

Its also an advantage to have files hidden in a simple way like this way incase you are hacked or something- having important files encrypted and out of immediate reach.

Liberte installs to a USB be in just a couple of mouse clicks.  GPA takes about the same amount of clicks to encrypt a message.  They are not hard to learn, and they are not complicated.  Furthermore, Liberte comes with everything you need, and is free.  True crypt is a bit more involved, but you need not learn everything at once.

You don't have to understand how an internal combustion engine works to be able to drive a car...  What possible, reasonable reason could you have for not taking the minimum of precautions when using the Road...  except unabashed laziness?.

Being a certified retard? Being lobotomized? Being kinky and liking to be forced into anal sex by Bubba in a 10 by 4 cell?

That's all I can think of at the moment.

I was going to say:

"A penchant for being buggered by Jacko in Cell H as he growls "Oh Nancy, Oh Nancy" in your ear"

...but you beat me to it Limetless!
