I notice a lot of people are trading bitcoins in the forums at bitcoin talk.
Why do they do that and not use trading sites? Are the rates better normally if you buy from private persons rather than trading sites?
It seems more insecure to buy from private persons, that's why I am asking (and yes I am new to bitcoins).

Cause people pay more USD for a given amount of BTC on a drug market.
In fact they should pay LESS cause everything ON S.R. is (by definition) something of a security risk (not slamming S.R... but stating facts.. ).
BTC Vendors want to make their money on newbs and high-BTC-holding vendors who can't be bothered to research and use off-site (and thus legally safer) means of buying and selling Bitcoin.
Never again a BTC Vendor for me!!! NEVER!

..and then there are the verification issues. SR and Bitmit are the best ways I know of getting btc.

yeah but not all the sites ask for an id to verificate you
someones like wirvox for example

I don't use third party sites to advertise my services but would be happy to do so - the advantage being that many people are unwilling/unable to access the SR forums but still may need BTC.
Having said this (and it really doesn't help my modest little business to say so), buying BTC through an exchange is actually a lot easier and safer than most people make out, provided you run the coins through a mixer after buying them.
