Title: Android - Wiping Orweb & Orbot
Post by: jimmyfigg on April 24, 2012, 06:43 pm
Hi

As a relative newbie to SR I have been accessing my account via Tor bundle on my windows laptop and on my Android phone using Orweb and Orbot. In the interests of security I am running DBAN on my laptop to remove all traces and will only access SR using Tails on a bootable CD in future.

My problem is that I've got no idea how to remove all traces of previous SR access from my Android phone. I have uninstalled orweb and orbot but I can't be sure they haven't left anything lurking behind.

If anybody has any suggestions I'd be eternally grateful!

Thanks

jimmy

Hi buddy,

I've been interested in this too as I'm toying with the idea of selling Android phones with these apps and others pre-installed but enough of my plugging, onto your question.

First off, Orweb keeps no local browsing history so it would take an experienced digital forensics expert to extract any meaningful data.

Secondly, there is an application called Autowipe which will restore your phone to Factory settings (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vesperaNovus.app.AutowipeFree&hl=en)

Finally, what version of Android are you running? As memory serves anything from 2.3 above can support full device encryption which would make analysis of your phone's browsing history virtually impossible?

If you do have this feature on phone enable it, if not I would suggest you use an encryption app for Android to have Orweb and Orbot installed to a secure folder. More details on request.

Hope this helps buddy,

V.

Hey vlad1m1r

Thanks - that was a quick response! I like the idea of wiping the phone with autowipe for extra peace of mind.

My phone is a HTC Sensation XE running Android 4.0.3 and HTC Sense 3.6. I like the idea of encrypting the whole phone or orweb/orbot if possible but I can't find anything in the settings. I presume I'd need a 3rd party app so if you have any suggestions I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again for your help

jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

No problem buddy,

You're in luck if you're using Android 4.0, it supports Full Device Encryption, take a look at :

http://www.htc.com/help/www/howto_iframe.aspx?id=157449&type=1&p_id=444

If anyone else is reading this, I think Jimmy has exactly the right idea. The most anonymous way to use Silk Road and Tor is in combination with a Smartphone, with full device encryption, with a prepay SIM card.
