Title: Installing drivers and apps in Liberte
Post by: brutusk on March 24, 2012, 07:52 am
Can it be done? I am a linux newbie, but have found Liberte very easy to use. I need to install a print driver, I have the run file downloaded, but it keeps giving me a permission denied message. Also, I would like to install a few portable apps like firefox portable (midori isn't ringing my bell at all).

If someone can point me in the right direction it would sure be appreciated!

bump...anyone? when I try to install hplip it gives me a permission denied error. When I try to boot into root access it gives me a time out error even though I am well under the two minute limit. I really don't want to print labels on my real-world desktop, but this driver installation shit is giving me a headache...

Sorry buddy as far as I know this can't be done - I'm using Liberte myself at the moment and would really like to see Bitcoin software on there but I think it's a built in security feature that no apps/drivers can be installed - obviously you could rebuild the entire image but it wouldn't be as secure.

If you need to print something out, I suggest encrypting it with PGP then mailing it to yourself so you can do the deed on your other OS.

Although Midori can be buggy and can leak DNS requests, it is very lightweight which means the installation can be saved and boot easily from USB - there's no particular reason to use Liberte Linux if you want a secure OS, it's just good "out of the box" solution for Tor lovers - for instance it's very easy to put an encrypted install of Ubuntu on USB which would include Firefox, printer drivers etc. - if you need help feel free to send me a message!

Or you can save the object on the /media directory on the same usb drive Liberte is installed on.  Pull the drive out, and the object will seen by whatever other OS reads the drive when it's reinserted.  Print, then securely delete the object when you're done with it. As long as the object isn't saved to the persistence folder in Liberte, it will still be accessible from another OS.

I like the idea of using Liberte installed to a USB drive for one thing exclusively:  Accessing the Road.  I may use Tor on other operating systems, but I won't access SR from them.  I feel like this self imposed separation keeps me from getting too comfortable and careless with the locations files might be written to, and the only evidence that can tie me to SR is on that one little, encrypted usb stick, which can be hidden or destroyed quite easily.

Make sure you download the updated Liberte snapshot- it has an updated kernel and packages that improve the functionality of Liberte.  You can link to it from the Liberte main page.  I couldn't configure Liberte to work with my sound card prior to installing the snapshot...  Once installed, I didn't have to do a thing except adjust the levels in ALSA.  Dunno if it would help with printer drivers, but the documentation might shed some light.

I have it even worse.  Liberte doesn't have the right drivers for my internet card, so I can't even go online with it.

I'm still a newbie at linux, but I would think you could set up a home network to print through another computer.  But of course if you're trying to keep liberte as isolated as possible, networking with another computer might not be the best idea.

You might could get help here: hXXps://forum.dee.su/#home .

The developer of Liberte, Max Kammerer, posts regularly.  Post your question, and you'll likely get a quick response.

The updated snapshot can also be downloaded from there, and might contain the drivers for your particular card.  I'm certainly no expert when it comes to Linux...  the forum above really helped me out.

There is an easier way to attain superuser privileges (root) in Liberte, when you use this get what you need done and reboot, you don't want to use this while browsing ect...When you boot the device where liberte is installed you first see a screen with different options for booting into liberte, if you press tab on the option you usually use you'll be able to set boot options. For root access for entire session, type this after the last option (use a space between the two): gentoo=root
This flag can be added to force liberte to use the xvesa generic video driver if, after booting, all you see is a black screen and/or you boot into the shell(looks like a command prompt taking up the entire screen) and cannot start the desktop environment: gentoo=xvesa

It is possible to install new apps without rebuilding the whole distro, but is not recommended whatsoever. Especially for new users that are not familiar with linux, because you would have to manually set up the app to run through tor. And if this isn't setup correctly, it defeats the purpose of using liberte in the first place.

Check for new snapshots regularly, as they come with new/improved software, drivers, and other system and security tweaks(Although I must note snapshots are technically beta releases and are not expected to run 100% although it could).

Or you could download Virtualbox, load up a generic windows or linux .iso, install all the drivers you need to print labels then save it as an encrypted snapshot inside a truecrypt container when not in use.

Can also slipstream in whatever drivers you want to the .iso after downloading, then burn it. Nliteos.com will work for this, or Remastersys (linux) will make your entire regular install into live CD image you can burn.
