Dr X,

A true pleasure to welcome you back on-board. The work you did before held significant value, and I'm sure it will again.

Allow me to present your alias with its very first bit of positive karma.

Silk Road Discussion / Re: Should Silk Road change name?
« on: October 11, 2013, 08:10:01 am »
To those who feel DPR should not be using the title, let me remind you of why that name was originally chosen (most of you know this already):

Quote
Roberts had grown so rich, he wanted to retire. He took me to his cabin and he told me his secret. 'I am not the Dread Pirate Roberts' he said. 'My name is Ryan; I inherited the ship from the previous Dread Pirate Roberts, just as you will inherit it from me. The man I inherited it from is not the real Dread Pirate Roberts either. His name was Cummerbund. The real Roberts has been retired 15 years and living like a king in Patagonia.

The title is a baton that is passed, and nobody but the DPRs themselves know when.

In this case, the general consensus is that the person we assume to be the old DPR hasn't retired of his own choosing. But although we can neither confirm nor deny such speculation, if Ross is indeed he, he would be happy that the concept had continued in the way he (or indeed those before him) had planned.

Remember that.

The support is overwhelming in this thread, thanks to all for remaining patient.

I have seen a lot of rumor and speculation regarding what date the platform will go live - this thread will be updated with the official word at the appropriate time. So feel free to speculate, but remember that rumors of dates, unless you've heard it from either this thread or an official source, will most likely be false.

Again, thanks for all of your support.

I don't want to hear what peoples' politics are if it means they leave a digital fingerprint of their RL personal self for the feds to fuckin profile. Change the way you speak and think in RL on here is my advice. If yiiiire American try and sound liuke an Aussie if you're Aussie try and speak loike a pom. etc. The politics forums at the old site were mostly not used by the end anyway.

Also: Fuck the mises institute- read up on your security instead.

just make a new account on the forums, not connected to any other account clearnet or here, specifically for the purpose of posting in this subforum. if you're that concerned about it.

no need to just dump the whole thing entirely. i think itsa place for good conversation with the community and serves a purpose.

+1 Timothy. Seeing as this is your first post, I assume this handle will be spouting plenty of philosophical goodness? ;-)

Barack Obama is Hallucinating Horse aka DealerOfDrugs aka Coachella420

*Chuckle*

Dear God, I hope never to be labelled such. Then again, if I make sure not to stomp about making wild threats and unfounded allegations, I should be OK.

I can get "V" to 100 posts in no time solely on the basis of making fun of my math skills!  :-)

Making fun? Au contraire, my friend. Rather, I'm admiring and analyzing your casual observation :-)

I don't think that well established vendors should have to worry about escrow. I don't think that 35 transactions is well established though. I have my own thoughts of what well established means, but it should be based on dollar amount and not transactions. I know escrow is there to protect buyers, but what protects sellers in the event of a take down? There were several vendors who lost lots of coin in the SR take down that would otherwise have been paid. If vendors aren't protected, then why would they continue to sell in the open instead of going into their private market caves? It isn't like demand only exists in public markets like SR, so we should respect the vendors who have worked hard to build their reps and not tie their hands with escrow requirements.

Not that I necessarily disagree with you, but if it were based on a dollar amount, what would stop a vendor 'buying' a high-value item (= to the dollar amount needed) from him or herself, using a separate account, forfeiting the 10% in SR commission and then pulling a massive runner?

I'm only trying to expand trains of thought on this topic.

I know you can't say where they are, But are they out of the USA? UK? Frnace?

This is a issue for a lot of people, including myself

Your best bet right now if you want to remove the label of 'LE' countless spectators will have slapped mentally to your username, is to pretend you were testing how smart DPR is... then again, folk probably won't believe you ;-)

Hard luck.

V

Are you accusing me of something here?

I'm accusing you of nothing. I was trying to highlight why some readers of this thread may have got their backs up, albeit in a light-hearted and friendly manner.

Apologies for any offense.

Thanks seventysix76 (76 squared?)

If seventysix was the number 76, and 76 represented an algebraic symbol that we knew to have the value of 76, this would be correct. Just like 2x (where x = 2) would be 2 squared.

I see you're a bit of a mathematician?

Mr Obama

It's probably for the best that you don't let this faze you.

DPR did respond and explain his reasoning to you rather than ignore you from the start, and considering how busy he is right now, that's a victory in its own right.

He explained to you the reason, and fair or not, he has his work cut out right now and is quite understandably snowed under trying to get the site up and running, verify vendor accounts, establish staff and more...

Don't take the fact that he's ignoring you personally. The polite and neutral response you received is more than some would have offered, and if it is still eating you when things have calmed down again, perhaps by entering into polite, private discussion with him (again, note that I'm talking about once the dust has settled), you may find you get a further response. Or, you may not...

Either way, there's no reason to let this matter remain non-amicable.

Like somebody mentioned (sorry 'somebody', I didn't note your name before I started this reply) - in theory, you won't lose your bond anyway. This of course is only theory, and if the site is seized before you get it back, you will lose it. It's a risk you have to be able to take if you're serious about vending.

Don't ever risk more than you can afford to lose.

@ Mr Lucy

If you trust the old staff from the original SR, and trust that their forum handles weren't all compromised (and that LE managed to match their writing styles to perfection), you can trust this new site.

If you don't, you can't.

I see the sense in waiting for the marketplace to go live, but there would be no harm in starting the rumor mill early, right? It would give vendors (and buyers, if my earlier suggestion is taken on board by those concerned about losing their buyer stats) the chance to start pointing their existing contacts in the right direction and manually re-building the soon-to-be-lost reviews.
