Signing a message can be important, for example say someone has just come back from a break and want to prove they're not compramised, Hello, I am [Insert Name Here] and I have just come back to Silk Road and will be selling again!  If you paste that into your PGP client and click "Verify" it will tell you that I said those exact words and it's infact from me.
