Silk Road Discussion / Re: Invite-system endangers anonymity
« on: November 09, 2013, 02:32:04 am »
For years I was an active member of a website and forum called cannabisworld.  The community mostly discussed methods of growing marijuana.  Eventually the website was seized by the feds.  A few years later I found out that the website was revived, although they had instated an invite only member policy.  It had been so long since my original membership, and I had never really befriended anyone on the anonymous forums, so I was refused access to the new site.  I was very unhappy.

Anyway, I think everybody should be allowed to join silkroad.  That is kind of the whole point, isnt it?

Unfortunately there are some people out there whose only interest is to cause harm to this wonderful community so we had to take some drastic measures to counter the threat.

I am sure the restrictions will be relaxed over time but for now it is BLOODY fantastic not having to deal with the relentless trolling.

Anyway, as ChemCat said welcome Marvin :)

I will ask DPR to review this thread and make comment as they see fit as this clearly is a point of concern for some people.

As others have said though of anyone is that concerned then do not invite others and ask and admin/mod to do it.

Refreshing to read yet more unbiased and balanced reporting to counter the mainstream propaganda machine churning out it's lies and bullshit.

Welcome to our community Mike.

cheers, Synergy. gonna be an interesting ride for you lot. i'd be happy to chat any time. all the best. mp

Hi Mike,

Yes 'interesting' it will most certainly be along with many other adjectives ;)

If you want to talk to anyone else you need to raise it with DPR but I can tell you I have no desire to raise my own profile any higher than it already is, I see Forbes has already quoted me and I could do without it to be honest, I am just a forum moderator here.

Silk Road Discussion / Re: Q & A for DPR
« on: November 09, 2013, 12:02:03 am »
Let's keep this thread clean and respectful, while I have great respect for the people bringing us this site, there are some very valid concerns being brought up by members of the forum. My questions are:

Do you have a backup plan to return escrow money to wallets in case the feds pull the plug?

Do you think it may be a good idea to ask the forum members (maybe in the form of a poll) before you go making public statements meant for the media to distribute?

Why do you think it's not poor Opsec to take the public stance you have taken?

I'm sure there are many more questions the community would like to see answered.

Some of the answers you seek may have already been provided, from the opening statement on the market site upon logging in "We are proud to announce though, that our new security measures include emergency strategies to ensure that, in the event of Silk Road’s demise once more, no member will lose their coins."

Speaking for myself I have no issue with DPR getting factual and truthful information out to the media to counter the bullshit and lies and that most certainly does not automatically equate to poor OPSEC.

Given it would be highly inappropriate for anyone to discuss arrangements all I can tell you is our new DPR takes their security incredibly seriously and arrangements are light years ahead of free WiFi in coffee shops and municipal library's.

Security / Re: A Lesson on the Improper Use of PGP
« on: November 08, 2013, 10:44:38 pm »
On the one hand it is very encouraging to see the uptake in use of PGP by community members, on the downside we have issues as described in the OP.

PGP is a tool to be used carefully and wisely, threads like this will hopefully help to educate others and make us all safer.

He didn´t respond I thought that I could get his attention with this..

I will draw his attention to your request.

In the mean time though I am locking this, if you do not get a response in a few days send me a personal message and I will escalate it for you.

I'd really like to speak to people in real-time, but I have something telling me that has a security risk to it.

Never going to happen.

Nice interview Mike. Your questions are certainly very insightful. Though I would point out that it's not exactly accurate to call it an exclusive. I also interviewed the new DPR for my story on Mashable (clearnet link: http://mashable.com/2013/11/06/silk-road-dread-pirate-roberts/).

Looks like we have a journalist pissing contest unfolding here *gets some popcorn* ;)

Just read that a BMR trader got busted in a honeypot sting. Was selling ATRs and taking money by western union so no love lost there but coincidence ? Yeah, probably !

Taking money by Western Union?

Wow there's a surprise then.

I still wonder why he agreed to have to coke mailed to his house

Probably because he thought he was gonna get some $$ out of it.  BTW, was it really "nob" who was the UC?  If so, then anyone with half a brain should have smelled the bacon when you clicked on his page.

You'd have to be a "nob" to deal with "nob"!

The aroma of bacon emanating from nobs vendor page was indeed quite strong.
