Title: MoneyPak <=> BitCoin Venders
Post by: Addy on September 13, 2011, 04:05 pm
What kind of luck have people had with them?

RapidExchange
bitcoinexchange
Borneo

There are probably others, but I'm fairly new, and am unaware of previous success with these trades.

As much fun as waiting endlessly for Dwolla > Mt.Gox > Silk Road is, MoneyPak seems incredibly convenient. Obviously there are legal risks, as you have to buy the MoneyPak in person, but to me they seem negligible (when I get carried off to prison, I'll be sure to log on and give you all a heads up warning).

Anyway, as this type of service seems prone to attract scammers, I was curious if anyone else could verify that one or more of these venders are candid or just out to scam people.

I've used RapidExchange twice and had no problems. It took a couple hours the first time and less than an hour the second.
No experience with any others.

@Borneo:  I used him once and he went the extra mile for me.  He was reliable.  Responsive.  Honest.  I would use him again in a second.

I've heard tons of good things about Borneo, I plan on using his services fairly soon. As far as the legal risks go with buying moneypaks, you're only using them to buy bitcoins. Nothing illegal about that. Plus he sends the coins straight to your SR account so you don't even have to mess with using instawallets to obscure the money trail! Super cool. Maybe I'm dumb and I'm missing something but the moneypak route seems about as safe as it gets.

bitcoinexchange ripped off a bunch of people, including SWIM, and got kicked off SR.   While I see the obvious benefit of this type of service, especially to new members, there is little protection for the buyer because there is no escrow protection.  So you have to use these services at your own risk.  My advice: go small or not at all.  In other words, exchange $100 or so at a time, not $500 or $1000.

You should never have more money out your of direct contact in this business that you cannot afford to lose.  Exchanges close.  BTC fluxuates.  Well, you get the picture.

I would like to nominate www.get-bitcoin.com as a reliable and quick method of exchanging a MoneyPak code for BTC.  They are west coast and therefore up later for a lot of us.  They are good for a 24 hour turn time and have excellent communication skills.

Borneo is legit as it gets, I've exchanged several high value exchanges with him, quick and professional.  Bitcoinexchange ripped me off.  I have no experience with Rapidexchange.

I used SumYunGai a couple days ago because RapidExchange wasn't listed. He did it through BTC Buddy. I think he didn't have the bitcoins at the time. Anyway, he was legit.

Update:

I see current venders being

SumYunGai
BTCBuddy
BTC4U
Borneo
Digital Express

Borneo's having issues with MP/GD freezing his/their cards. Heard good things from several people, so let's hope he/they get their stuff fixed :)
Digital Express appears to be a scammer.

I'm trying SumYunGai and will report back later tonight.

I have used SumYunGai and while it took overnight to get my BTC he more than made up for it in communication and overall customer service.

I used BTC Buddy last time and got my bitcoins in under 2 hours. SumYunGai came through for me too. I haven't used Borneo yet, but I've only heard good things so far. I don't understand why they keep shutting his accounts off. Selling bitcoins isn't illegal. Maybe they think he's laundering money or something.

Don't exchange more than you can afford to lose and remember good feedback doesn't mean someone won't turn into a scammer.

How is Digital Express still allowed to have exchange listings after all the negative forum feedback?

Sum was temporarily out when I messaged him, and I haven't heard back from BCBuddy yet.

I think Silk Road should offer a mediation-like process, where either SR or old, trustworthy members could act as a third party. Person with MoneyPak sends the number to SR, other person sends BitCoins, then SR gives MP number.

BTC4U is a scam.   Had no feedback, but I figured I'd give him a try.  (BTC Buddy didn't have feedback when I first used him but that worked out ok).
BTC4U is fairly convincing - Updates when he has coins available, how many available, etc.  Most of the day he said he was out.
I ordered, gave my MP#, waited, found the order cancelled.  Went online to check balance, sure enough $0.00.

Could someone explain how this works a bit, I tried messaging Borneo but got no response. So am I understanding this right? I go to walgreens or some other store, pickup a greendot card load it with X dollars and 'buy' one of these exchange widgets and tell them I have xyz.00 dollars and they quote me how many btc they will offer and I then accept and provide them the card number and they then pull money from it and give me btc in exchange? I just want to make sure I understand this correctly.

SumYungGai is one of the best vendors here, he went above the protocol to accommodate me and will continue to get my business.
I suggest you all go to him for you MP to BTC needs

SWIM used SumYunGai, BTC Buddy, RapidExchange and Borneo.

SumYunGai was totally awesome, helpful and honest.  Had my coins within minutes.  BTC Buddy and RapidExchange were about the same, and were both great (but higher fees than Sum).

Borneo was completely unresponsive and had me waiting for 3+ days, so I canceled.  He didn't steal anything, just said "You'll have your coins at such and such time", never did the trade or responded to PMs.  This was a 2 weeks or so back, so I don't know if that's how he always is.  I can vouch for honesty at least.
