De groep verdachten uit Groningen en Drenthe die in april werd opgepakt voor de grootschalige productie en verkoop van xtc, deed dat via een verborgen website, Silk Road. Dat is een soort Markplaats voor drugs en wapens.
Omdat de recherche nog volop bezig is met het onderzoek, wil het Openbaar Ministerie niets zeggen over het onderzoek dat luistert naar de naam Mantia.
Voor zover bekend is het de eerste keer dat verdachten zijn opgepakt die drugs distribueerden via Silk Road. Silk Road is de schrik van justitie. IP-adressen van computers en dus de distributeurs van aangeboden spullen zijn niet te traceren omdat er gebruik gemaakt wordt van het internetnetwerk TOR. Dit netwerk dook ook op bij de Amsterdamse zedenzaak Robert M.
De betaling geschiedt met Bitcoins of BTC: een virtueel betaalmiddel. Coins kunnen ook omgewisseld worden voor cashgeld. Verdachten uit het onderzoek Mantia hebben tijdens verhoren bekend dat ze gebruik maakten van dit netwerk, maar wilden niet vertellen wie dit deed en hoe of waar de Bitcoins werden omgezet in geld.
Onder de zeven verdachten uit Groningen, Onstwedde en Emmen was er één die de pillen draaide. Dat gebeurde in Westerbork. De andere verdachten fungeerden als distributeurs en koeriers. De pillen gingen de hele wereld over. Duitsland was het belangrijkste afzetgebied.

Volgens hoofdverdachte Tele Benoni (roepnaam Theo) van G. (62) uit Emmen zijn er zeker 200.000 pillen geproduceerd. De recherche vond ook vuurwapens en grondstoffen voor de productie van de ’pretpillen’.

Hij is 62 en ziet er met zijn lange baard uit als een hippie. De ene compagnon uit zijn drugsnetwerk noemt Theo van G. ’de zwerver’, de ander noemt hem ’Sinterklaas’. Pillendraaier van een bende met een uniek distributiesysteem.
Ze staan op scherp, laat op de avond van 22 november. Agenten in Emmen zijn op zoek naar de autokrasser die de stad al maanden in zijn greep houdt. De agenten zien een man op een bijrijderstoel van een Golfje.
Een vrouw drentelt verdacht om de auto. Is zij of hij de beruchte krasser? Even voor middernacht zetten ze de wagen aan de kant. Met autokrassen blijken ze niets te maken te hebben. Wel met de handel in drugs.
In de wagen liggen honderden xtc-pillen. Bij een kennis in de woning vindt de politie meerdere handvuurwapens, waaronder het ’James Bond-pistool’, een Walther PPK. Ook liggen er meer zakken vol ’pretpillen’. Het is een gelukstreffer. Een mazzeltje.
En het geluk kan niet op. Bij Albertina O. uit Musselkanaal treft de politie een notitieblokje aan. De hele administratie van de xtc-bende staat erin. Verkoopcijfers, exportlanden, namen van koeriers. Alles. Het kasboek van de xtc-bende van ’Sinterklaas’. Er staat zelfs een to do-lijstje in.
Op 5 april 2013 valt de politie panden binnen in Groningen, Emmen en Westerbork. In een pand in Westerbork vindt de recherche in een verborgen ruimte een pillenmachine. De eigenaar van het pand zwijgt bij de politie, maar pillendokter Theo van G. uit Emmen praat honderduit.
In zijn huis worden zakken vol xtc gevonden. Voor vijf cent per pil verkocht hij ze. “Ik drukte 3333 pillen per uur”, zegt hij tijdens een verhoor. Het werk was niet zonder gevaar. Als hij de grondstof MDMA bewerkte kwamen er giftige dampen los. “Soms zag ik dan ineens drie pillenmachines”, zegt hij begin april tegen het verhoorkoppel van de recherche.
Van G. vindt zichzelf vooral een hobbyist. Hij tikte de pillenmachine in 2009 op de kop, repareerde het ding en sloeg aan het drukken. Hij vertelt de politie van alles, maar over de website Silk Road dat werd gebruikt voor de verkoop van de drugs, laat hij weinig los.
De recherche weet van andere verdachten dat Silk Road werd gebruikt. Theo vertelt over de Bitcoins, het elektronische betaalmiddel dat werd gebruikt. Maar over het omruilen in echt geld zegt hij niets. Ook wordt voor de recherche niet duidelijk wie de handelswaar op Silk Road plaatste.

Van G. vertelt wel met enige trots hoe de pillen verpakt werden. “We stopten ze in dvd’s met een cover van kerkmuziek. Daar is lang over nagedacht.”
Niet iedereen is zo behulpzaam als ’Sinterklaas’. De Emmenaren Sander V. (33) en Bernd S. (40) bijvoorbeeld, die worden verdacht van deelname aan de xtc-bende, zwijgen. Frans W. uit Groningen intrigeert de recherche ook: hij is de enige van de groep die eerder is gepakt met een xtc-laboratorium. Het blijft een raadsel voor de recherche wie de spullen precies op Silk Road verkocht en wie de bitcoins incasseerde of verzamelde.
Wie erin slaagt in het verborgen netwerk te komen, kan kinderlijk eenvoudig drugs bestellen. Wachten op straat voor de man met de scooter of de auto met het raampje dat omlaag gaat, is straks niet meer van deze tijd.
Justitie erkent het probleem van Silk Road, maar zegt geen idee te hebben van de omvang van de drugshandel via deze site. Er wordt niet gericht gezocht op Silk Road, maar als er aanwijzingen zijn voor handel, treedt justitie op.

I don't know exact details. One of my good friends got MDMA pressed by these guys and he knows the details of the case better than I do. He says the investigation did not start from SR but through unrelated means. The police only found they were involved with SR after seizing their computers. I don't know if the documents they found included customer shipping addresses or only usernames and the URL or what, but they definitely found unencrypted documents which is how they knew they were involved with SR.

I hate to say it but it looks like another case to prove how important internet, and computer security is if you decide to become a vendor. Many of us will always fly under the radar because we buy small amounts for personal use and have no information for the police that they couldn't find themselves by opening an account on the forums. It's when you take that leap into becoming a vendor or a reseller that you instantly put yourself in the line of sight of LEO. Keep things small, light, and personal and deal with only with people you've built a connection and buisness relationship with over time. If you decide to resell or become a vendor then please take the time and do your homework and make sure you and your files are 100 % protected and never ever get lazy. Everyone's security depends on it. Stay safe people.
