I've never used anything other than BitInstant/MtGox... what's good with $1000+ deposits?

Localbitcoins.com is my personal recommendation. Most sellers there will allow you to deposit directly into their account and you can maybe split it across 2 or 3 sellers of the most highly rated ones within your areas.

Depends on how much over 1k. You could try BlueSkyTraders if you wanna keep it 100% anonymous. I use MtGox and CampBx. Buying BTC is legal and as long as you stay under certain limits (depending on where you are) you will never raise any flags. Honestly more info is needed to give you a solid answer like country, past buying activity, and total amount you want to purchase.
You could also split it across multiple platforms if you're scared for some reason.

A lot of sites use a similar system to the escrow that's used here - pick the right site and you'll be fine.

I've never used them - I have my little diamond site that I use. 30 mins to wallet even after washing coins first.
I'm UK - so it wouldn't be anygood for my US friends anyhow.

There are idiots in society. I've read the thread and I was one of the first to lambast the guy in another thread for his stupidity. I consider people like that the exception and not the rule. Much ado about nothing!

The rates change but on average you pay a 3% fee. So if you deposit $1400 worth you will get $1358 worth of BTC. That's a rough estimate, but if you email them they will tell you exactly how many coins you will receive on the morning that you use them. That way you can decide if you are happy with the rate.

hey dont forget that you can also use SR vendors for BTC use.
JumboMonkeyBiscuit is the only one I use and hes Legit and Trustworthy. Large transfers are not an issue usually.

True, but honestly I don't feel as comfortable going through a SR vendor for btc.

Honestly....i kinda feel the same way. However, i am saving up to become a Vendor moving small quantities of
stuff to a few people. However...i want to be able to sell my bitcoins back to the SR community like old jumbomonkeybisquit...but...i have an issue with cashing out...so..jumbomonkeybisquit would ya mind msg'ng me please :)

Moon Fried I completely understand the inability to trust SR coin vendors.
Their are most defly a lot of scammers in bitcoin department here. We work as hard as anyone on SR to keep our product moving and keeping our customers happy and comfortable during the process.
