Title: A possible alternative to TorMail
Post by: G00D2G0 on May 13, 2013, 09:28 pm
I don't know about you guys, but Tormail always down for me. Even when it does work my inbox erases itself and remains empty even when I know people have sent me mail. I don't even bother using it anymore because it's so unreliable.

StartMail seems like it's going to be a good alternative. It's not ready yet but, but you can sign up as a beta tester if that's something you're interested in doing. Here is the website if you guys wanna check it out:  https://startmail.com/

From what I can tell it is based in the US and they clearly state that they will reveal  information or co-operate with authorities where they are legally obliged to do so. It also says nothing on how the emails are stored. I'd only trust an email service which encrypts its content in such a way the operators themselves cannot read the content even if they wanted to and then have a court case or public record to prove they were unable to help authorities, ie, failed prosecution of users for being unable to read e-mail content.

That's exactly how Katherine Albrecht described it. I didn't get a chance to look into it too much, but I like her and the work she does so I tend to trust what she says. I'll definitely look into it more once it's ready, but for now I thought people might be interested to check it out.

Very cool! I know these guys well because their search engine has replaced Google/Yahoo/Bing on all of my computers. Been using them for months now. Even though their e-mail service may not be a good Tormail alternative, it could replace Gmail and other webmail services completely. Would be awesome if they came up for an Android app, so I could dump Gmail completely on my phone. I'm definitely all for it, even though it may not be the solution people here are looking for. One at a time, guys :)
