I've also done a little research into this field as it seems to have large rewards for a relatively low risk.
The two main types of imported tobacco products are:
Ones from the continent from low tax countries (£20-£30 for 200)
Ones from china ($150-$200 for 10,000 when buying in bulk)
The ones imported from china are usually fakes (unsurprisingly) and can vary in quality. Some fakes are hardly distinguishable and others can be poorly packaged and unsmokable. Good ones can look and smoke like the real thing and tax stamps from most EU countries can be replicated so the product appears genuine.
When importing from china it is normally done by the container load (About 4 million for a 20 foot container and 9/10 million for a 40ft one). These numbers relate to if the container is packed full, some people who import tobacco only half fill the container with cigs and fill the rest a cover load (Cheap products that make the shipment look genuine if opened). This seems smart, but in my opinion pointless, 95% of the time if your container is being investigated it will be xrayed, this will show up any inconsistency within the load, it will be easy for customs to see the differences throughout the load and pick up on organic products.
When purchasing from china you normally put down a 40-50% deposit when buying in bulk and pay the rest off once your order has been produced and you have visited the factory to check it's alright. Shipping to the UK is usually successful with a +90% success rate and can take 10-20 days with port clearance. The cost of shipping can range from £2000-4000 including UK delivery
In my opinion it would be best to import ones from china but so they appear to come from Europe, this way they are easier to sell as you can say you picked them up whilst on holiday there and are just looking to make a quick buck. When trying to sell fake English ones people may question how you can be selling them UK cigarettes at half the UK retail price and suspect your products are fake.
Any more questions just PM me
Kind regards

This is not too hard but the planning and infrastructure needs to be done correctly.

I'm not too sure about faking the duty but i'd doubt a large tobacco manufacture would sell to anybody. if you are looking for a fast profit then it would be best to import fakes straight from china. Do a little research into people who have been caught importing tobacco and how they were caught. It would surprise if it wasn't possible to order and ship a container full of tobacco from your computer, and then just pay cash to a guy with a lorry to collect it from the dock and drop it off at a location of your choice. Some people who import large quantities of illegal goods set up fake business to hide their activities, this would probably decrease the risk of getting caught but requires time and money.
if caught get a good solicitor. But the court will be in your favor if it is your first offense and you have a job. 2-4 years seems to be what most people are getting and say it was the first time you did it (if you use a different name/business each time they could find it hard to prove otherwise).
Also, remember when given a sentence under 7 years (I'm not 100% sure how long) you will only serve half of it in prison and will serve the rest of your sentence in the community.
Ir regards to selling, selling it to people in bulk who will resell it on the black market would probably be best. I know i'd buy some.

big money to be made if you can get it into corner shops etc but chances are you could be stepping on someones toes - you ready to have a disagreement with people already doing this?

Well if you're happy with that you'll find a lot of corner shops will sell under the counter (I've known plenty in several large cities who did) or have people going pub to pub. But as already said there will be people doing it so you will need to get them to switch supplier.
