Technical reason: their Apache server is configured to reroute the main domain to the www.domain... which is a common default setting for Apache... something entirely under their control. and nothing to be concerned about.

Laymen reason: "maintenance" http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=151563.0

That guy knows what hes talking about, Listen to him.

www.*.onion is fine..

*.*.com is bad.

Uhhh... no.  It's your browser: if you can't connect to the server, then it can't very well redirect you anywhere.

Put "about:config" (no quotes) in the address bar and hit enter.  That will bring you to the advanced options page of Firefox (Tor Browser is a version of Firefox).  Then search for "browser.fixup.alternate.prefix" and change it from "www" to be blank.

Fixed.

Er, the site is down, that's what's wrong.  I didn't mean to say it'll connect if you change that, just that it won't try to connect to "www.silkroadvb5piz3r.onion" anymore.

What's going on is your browser is trying to connect to Silk Road, but it's down.  So it tries adding "www." to the beginning of the address in case the user just forgot to add it or something.  Then when that second attempt fails, it just leaves the "www." at the beginning and doesn't remove it.

That's why it's trying to open that page: because it tries the one you enter first, but when that fails, it tries something else.  No real harm done.

The site just came back up a short while ago so everyone is trying to log in right now. Give it a few hours ... or more.  8)
