I'm trying to deposit some coin into my SR account. But when I do, this message pops up:
Warning: Read this before making a deposit to your account
Your PIN is required to make purchases, withdraw funds from your account, and make important changes to your account. If you forget your PIN, or give it away to a phishing site impersonating Silk Road, any funds you deposit to your account will be irretreivable.
Before depositing any funds, you should change your PIN and password on your SETTINGS page. If you are unable to change them because you've already forgotten them, you must create a new account and try again.
Once you are ready, send your deposit to this address:
[insert bitcoin wallet address]
Why am I getting this message? I've never seen this before.
Why should I change my password and pin?
Why am I being forced to deposit the coin into a fixed address?
This is strange.

Well........ Have any of you been asked for this information?

It's shown because people kept depositing coins only to find out they need their original PIN to access them, which if you don't remember making a PIN kind of seems like SR just stole your coins, ya know. So changing them verifies that you have the correct info and can make purchases or withdraw them again, that's all.

Oh, godammit.
I can see why that's a decent idea.
But, why not make me enter my CURRENT pin number? And if I can't do that, then give me the option of creating a new one.
Now, I've got re-memorize a four digit pin and a bloody password.
I feel safer already.

Because that would require extra code. This is just a simple warning the first time you make a deposit, that's all. It requires no additional functionality to implement.
Hey, s'truth :)
