Title: Stop sending withdrawals as fee-free transactions
Post by: MDUK on March 29, 2013, 07:02 pm
So, since many of the BTC mining pools now no longer process transactions sent without a fee, it's often the case that my SR withdrawals end up taking several hours to get confirmed in my bitcoin wallet.
With BTC as a currency that so regularly suffers flash-crashes, would it not be a wise idea for SR to start paying some amount of transaction fee so that large withdrawals get processed quickly?

It would be a very good idea, provided they don't already.  I haven't checked for quite awhile.  The problem, of course, is that it opens them up to attacks involving mass withdrawals.  Easy, effective solution would be to increase the minimum withdrawal amount, but that has its own issues.

It's not as simple as just sacrificing 5 cents per withdrawal to make sure customers get their coins within 24 hours.  Don't misunderstand me, I think it's ludicrous not to pay a fee.  But I'm saying it's not as easy as flipping a switch -- there are other concerns.

You could just limit the number of withdrawals someone can make in a 1-hour period, limit someone to 2 withdrawals per hour and an attack based on transaction fees would be impossible.
Lots of mining pools do this sort of thing already.
