Title: "check.torproject.org" is not responding. Am I still safe using TOR?
Post by: biteme on March 07, 2013, 08:40 am
I just started up my Tor app (Vidalia) and it says that I am connected the Tor network, but next, when the Tor browser opened, it was unable to connect with the "check.torproject.org" page that usually comes up first and tells me that I am safe to browse anonymously.

I used a bookmark to connect to this forum (which is a ".onion" site) and it worked just fine.

Can anyone tell me what this all means?

I am assuming that the "check.torproject.org" server is just currently offline and that I am still safely running Tor because I figure that if I didn't have Tor running properly, I wouldn't be able to browse any ".onion" sites.

Is this correct?

Page is also not loading for me, I think it's down for everyone.

I assume we are safe because the tor browser only does requests over the tor network

Yep, perfectly safe.  That's just the page it loads when you open it -- it isn't needed for anything except to tell you whether it's working and if there's an update :)
