Title: HELP Please - Bitcoin Client - Error loading blkindex.dat
Post by: financeguy on March 05, 2013, 07:44 am
Hi All,
I have been trying to update my Bitcoin Client for the past 3 hours and it keeps coming up with Error Loading blkindex.dat. When I press ok, it closes down again.

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

Many Thanks in advance

Did you copy it someplace without detaching the client first or something?  You can try starting the client with the "-reindex" parameter and see if it works.  If not, you may just want to wipe away your block index and start from scratch.  If it's irrecoverably corrupted, not much else you can do.

Bugger...
I backed up my wallet on the 23rd Feb and have opened the client at least 3-4 times since ten to update and run for a few hours with no problems.
I haven't accessed or moved any of the files, but this computer didn't shut down properly yesterday and needed to do a disk check/repair when starting today.
I really don't want to have to download the whole client again. it took 6 days to download last time.

Do you know if I can take the wallet.dat file and use it with another easier lightweight client or some sort of instant wallet rather than having to re-install the QT client first?

Directly?  Sure.  The details are online and vary depending on what client you want to use, I'm sure.  Basically what you need to do is export your private key for your addresses in your wallet, then import them into the new client.  I'm sure it's online somewhere.
