Title: Silk Road link on hiddenwiki not legit?
Post by: DogDays on February 26, 2013, 02:26 am
As the board I am posting on shows, newbie here. New to the onion as well. Ive visited the silk road once before and created an account out of curiosity. I didnt write down the address or bookmark it. Went to the hiddenwiki (least I think it is) and the link to the Silk Road is different than other sites such as the torlibrary. Did not trust it enough to enter my info so I tried to make a new account to test it and the message "not accepting new account, try later" popped up instead. Makes me suspect.

Link I think is the real one http://silkroadvb5piz3r.onion

Do not use the tor2web site.  It is not safe, it is not secure, and you should always avoid it.

^ What SelfSovereignty said -- do not use the tor2web site.  You need to memorize SR's correct URL and NEVER use anything else.

Is that maybe the old link?

No, the link on the wiki is a phishing site to get ahold of users' PINs and passwords to then drain their accounts.

Thanks for the speedy reply scout! That's a bit scary! To be honest, I always used the gwern tutorial to get to SR before I decided to just bookmark the site :)

yeah, bookmark the correct URL and then try to memorize it so you don't have to rely on that bookmark.

Scamers edit the hidden wikki. I hear a while ago they created a fake Sr site to steal passwords.

Searching the deep web is a skill in its self and the hidden wikki is useless.

Most definitely don't use tor.to sites. Tor offers protection a regular browser does not.

Well, bookmarking it is a hell of a lot better than accessing it via the hidden wiki, I'd think.

I bookmarked SR since my TBB is in a truecrypt container.

Doesn't make it 100% safe (it never is) but at least i can't get on a phishing site.

Why not bookmark it? I think if your shit has been confiscated and they're going through your files, you've got more to worry about than a bookmark that links to the home page of The Silk Road.

Yeah, curious about the emphasis on NO bookmarking SR's URL. Why do you say that?

The newer SR url is at least a bit easier to remember than the old one

Use a program like Drivecrypt that will encrypt your entire hd... Then bookmark away. The NSA might be able to crack drive crypt but its well beyond the ability of law enforcement and NSA won't come after you over some drugs.

I would highly suggest TrueCrypt instead :

The FBI has admitted defeat in attempts to break the open source encryption used to secure hard drives seized by Brazilian police during a 2008 investigation.

Plus :
- Open Source
- Known to be resilient
- Offers hidden volume functionnality (It means you can have two passwords, one for emergency that displays a fake folder and one true password directing to your confidential folder).
- Can encrypt the whole system or just create a container.
- Very well documented.

If you use a robust password and TrueCrypt to crypt a Tor Browser Bundle, I think you can achieve a quite good level of security.
