As the title suggests - myself and many other forum users would like the option of formatting our posts to make them look nice, easier to read and most importantly, to emphasize what we are saying, such as the use of Bold, Italics, Underlining & Colors.
The SMF software (v 2.0.3) in use here supports the use of BBCode, it just has to be implemented.
http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Features - under 'Posting Features' "Vast number of "bulletin board codes" to use (including rtl, acronym, and others.) "
Here's a list of all the cool stuff you can do - http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Alphabetical_list_of_all_bulletin_board_codes
I know they can't all be used for security reasons, but surely a few of the more basic codes can be used safely?

Any chance of enabling code as described above...?

Just use oldschool markup:
*Bold*
_underlined_
/italic/
<code>
formatted verbatim
</code>
Replace sharp brackets with brackets, like so:
So you see, the problem is that nobody pays attention to the boards anymore, and personally I don't feel they have the expertise to decide what's safe and what isn't.
And even if they do, people's safety is at risk -- less is more in security. Hey look, it's a fake, contrived paragraph
that's just one big long run-on sentence because otherwise it wouldn't prove the point because the code tag would have
shoved the text all the way off to the right so nobody could see the rest of it -- swell, isn't it! :)
