Title: Tormail Website Suspended!
Post by: metropolitan1815 on November 03, 2012, 05:39 am
Tormail.org appears to have been suspended by the host, iPage. Could there be some kind of relation between SR being down and the Tormail shutdown? Is anyone else able to access tormail? Anyone have any more info on this?

I'm able to access Tormail.  FWIW, no one knows for certain who runs the Tormail site. I sincerely doubt it is related in any way to SR.

Are you using the correct address?  The right one is: http://jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion/

That worked for me. Normally I just type tormail.org and it refers me but it say's it's suspended, weird. http://jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion/ works fine though! Thanks so much.

Ah, now I understand what's going on.  Tormail.org has been suspended, but the  hidden service has not.  FWIW, the Tormail.org page was designed as a placeholder, or a static page to provide some information to people attempting to access Tormail on the clearnet.

I suppose, in one sense, that is to be expected -- after all, .com, .org, and .net are all U.S.-controlled domains.  The authorities simply can't have anonymous parties communicating privately, can they?  Perhaps this is all the result of a spurious complaint -- only time will tell whether this block will be lifted or not.

Tor Mail consists of several servers, this hidden service, and an incoming and outgoing internet facing mail servers.

These internet facing mail servers are relays, they relay mail in and out of the Tor network, they are disposable servers purchased anonymously and not traceable to you or us.

No emails or logs or anything important are stored on those servers, thus it doesn't matter if they are seized or shut down.

We are prepared to quickly replace any relay that is taken offline for any reason.

Well, let's see if that's true.

It would appear so. The tormail.org page is now back up.  I would hazard a guess that the speed at which it was restored is indicative of the fact that it was taken down over some spurious matter, as opposed to pressure from official sources.

Are there alternative email options to Tormail. It's hit and miss with me. Can't seem to sign in quite often.

The tormail.org/.net clearnet site is still down, the hidden server is not though.  In response to damaged's comment, I think tormail was talking about the hidden servers.  The clearnet site is nice to have but realistically anyone who knows deepweb enough shouldn't have an issue getting the hidden link to the site.

Well, since you can't just query tormail.org and let the program set itself up anymore and the hidden service isn't that obvious: thought this might be useful for people to have around somewhere.

Outgoing mail is SMTP at jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion on port 25. No security for connection, password transmitted insecurely. (hidden services have end-to-end encryption already anyway).

Incoming mail is IMAP at jhiwjjlqpyawmpjx.onion on port 143. Same security/authentication.  Thunderbird, Seamonkey I think... Hell, even Microsoft Outlook should work fine with it if you go through Tor.

As for onion sites having funky names, I think it's something to do with the initial salt that's used to seed the random algorithms... but I really don't know enough about cryptography to say with any certainty. Just a vague memory of something or other like that.

The hidden server isn't the one with the problem, it's the clearweb tormail.org that is offline.
