Generally speaking solvents work much better the hotter they are, but obviously you don't want the stuff too hot -- acetone is incredibly flammable (I mean like, crazy fucking flammable, it can actually be dangerous).You get the best wash if you pulverize the gear: anything that the acetone doesn't touch, like the inside of the shards, it won't dissolve. So basically you're only dissolving the cut on the outside if you don't powder the gear.
