I've spent many hours wrestling with very poor Linux WiFi driver support. I've had manufacturers include broken drivers (which wasted days of my time), then found a working version online. Support for Linux is sometimes not just an afterthought, but seemingly a broken mess that they fobbed off on some bloody intern or something. You may just want to use whatever works -- ultra safe or not, if the damn thing doesn't work and you're at the end of your wits, it's not the more secure option -- it's the fucking broken one.
