Title: Need some help with GPGTools (Mac OSX encryption tool)...
Post by: s506977 on May 22, 2013, 11:25 pm
I downloaded GPG tools (which I gather is essentially the MAC version of PGP) and I am pretty much clueless as to how to proceed when I want to send a message or address to a vendor on SR.

Forgive me for being fairly dense when it comes to such matters, as I spend the majority of my time in Abobe CS6.

How do I proceed when I want to send a message or address to a vendor?

Will there be any kind of comparability issue if said vendor is using a PC?

Does anyone have a link to any kind of tutorial that might be able to assist me?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I think GPG tools is based off of GNUPGP which is what I use but their GUI's are worlds apart :/

It will be hard to direct you specifically but I would do some google searches for stuff like gpg tools tutorials

I found one right on their website, it's nice tutorial that shows setup and exactly what you need to do at around 2:00 minutes in.

Go to
http://support.gpgtools.org/
Then click Getting Started

Once gpg is all setup and you've imported your vendors public key then you open a text editor, type in some text then right click and encrypt it from an option on the menu.  I believe the video shows how to set this all up in the beginning.  Just ignore the stuff about encrypting emails it may just get confusing.

FYI you don't need your own key to encrypt messages, only your vendors public key.  You need your key if you want to have your vendor send you something encrypted.    So technically you could just open the program, paste in your vendors key, open a text editor, type text, right click encrypt, it should be that simple but you never know.

Don't worry, I was a bit confused when I first tried to use it but like most things Mac when you understand it it's much easier and user friendly than Windows.

The best way to learn how to use it is by watching one of the demonstrations on YouTube, when you watch it it's very straightforward. :)

Thanks for the tips guys. I think what threw me off initially is that the intro videos focused primarily on email, and not what basically amounts to simple text messages.

However, I think I have enough source material that I can get a handle on it with some time and practice.

Thanks for all the helpful responses.
