Title: .onion sites not working.
Post by: herbaman on April 30, 2013, 06:47 pm
ANy input would be greatly appreciated.

I have downloaded the latest TOR bundle, an no .onion suffix sites open. Clear web sites work with no problem.
I tried different hard disk's and OS's. No luck. I have no other computer, works fine in my tablet.

Any similar issues, ongoing or resolved?

So you have a desktop and a tablet?  The tablet can access onion sites but the desktop cant?

Safe in the tor browser? hmm not sure, but I know you shouldn't use onion.to..

Just remove the .to from the address and its the same thing....the .to address should take you to another page that explains what its doing when you use that...If anything it will be slower with the .to so don't do that to yourself.

If I remove .to I can't get access to any .onion website!

A few questions:

1-Are you using Tails on the desktop?

2-Have you updated to the most recent version of Tor?  If not, do it ASAP.

3-Why are you accessing hidden services with a Tablet?  This is not advisable for a whole bunch of reasons.

4-I would not connect to anything in the onion network until your anonymity is secured.

1. No I'm not using any tails.
2. Yes I have tried several versions of TOR.
3. Desperate measures and needs!
4. Taken seriously, but what option do I have? Except for using. to or .sh or some suffix. can it be my isp blocked my tor?

I really want to help you access correctly so we are all safe...please help me

1.  Need a little more info...  as far as I understand you know accessing via onion.to is bad but you can't get either computer you have to access .onion sites, right?

2. You said you have access to a computer and a tablet...and that it works fine on the tablet.  Does that mean that onion.to sites work on the tablet but not on the desktop OR  Is it that your tablet is fine accessing onion sites but your computer no longer does and you would like us to help you troubleshoot your windows xp computer?

3.  Please let me know what happens when you run the tor bundle and try to access onion sites on both computers, ie, you download the bundle unpack it, run the vidalia control panel, let it connect to tor then it opens a browser and tells you your connected to tor, or whatever happens...

4.  What type of internet connection are you using? is it yours? dsl? cable? Are you using a router? Connected via Ethernet or wireless?

5. From the tor log I can see it can't connect at the end, is that where you tried to connect to the SR?

6. Your tablet and your computer, are they using the same internet connection right now?

No, you do NOT want to browse using the .to extension.  It is a gateway/proxy for accessing Tor sites without actually using Tor.  In other words: not secure AT ALL.  Whoever runs the .to proxy site has access to your IP address.  In fact, their page itself warns:

"By using this service instead of connecting directly to the Tor network you are trading off security and anonymity for convenience. Know that we can identify the IP of visitors using this service (but chooses not to). We strongly recommended to access Tor Hidden Services directly using the Tor Browser Bundle to increase your security and anonymity."

After searching for your issue, which appears quite common, it seems the majority of users were able to fix the problem by adjusting their system clock.  Check your vidalia output again (just like what you posted) and see if the times match your system clock.  If Tor detects that your time does not match the network, you will not be able to connect to hidden services.  See if this works after making sure that you are running the most recent release of Tor.
