What are people thoughts about buying one of these off the road? Is there any risk of it being supplied by LE or someone looking to rob you?

What are these? usb memory + os embedded? I think a secure livecd like an openbsd based one maybe be good as well

sounds awefully fishy to me :-/

Buy a cheap 8GB usb thumb drive and put Ubuntu on it and encrypt it. There should be lots of guides on the internet about this stuff.

Always better to roll your own. Then you know what's in it :)

There's no reason to buy that kind of thing here or anywhere else -- make it yourself. Buy a usb and install Tails on it, and use TrueCrypt for hidden volume encryption of the usb and/or any sensitive info.
Buying it "premade" from anyone is risky because you can't know for sure what they put on it. It's not safe. There are tons of guides available, as ixcc mentioned, and it would be FAR safer to make one yourself.

I'm using Truecrypt.... great software. But what's "Tails"?
-
much better to create your own

I have never tried Tails but Liberte was pretty easy to set up for me. Just do it yourself to be safest. There was a write up around here somewhere on setting up Liberte.
