So I was a little hasty on setting up a vendor account and think I should spend more time buying and getting to know my way around Silk Road. Is it possible to close down my vendor account and have the deposit returned?
I've not made any sales yet so there's no chance of any problems from customers.

I don't think so, but you'd need to check with Vendor Support on that issue. You can message them from the main site.
