It appears there is a new board!
I for one fully support this measure to eliminate the spam on the boards. Even though I had just made several very well thought out posts, I accept being retroactively noobified.
How many posts do I need before I am released into the wild?
Also it would seem sensible to move the pgp club to this board, where it will be more useful, stickied alongside some key information for new members..
=======================================================================================
EDIT
After some time to think about this new forum, in its current form I think it is a terrible fucking idea - for reasons which are far to numerous and obvious to go into.
If they admins actually want this to be a constructive place:
1 Other members need to have access to the newbie forum.
2 The 50 post requirement needs to be amended - there are some good suggestions in other threads - as this effectively makes it impossible for members who only want to post a review every now and again to do so. Forcing them to spam.spam.spam to be able to post a review in a place where it will be seen.
3 The moderators need to be given authority to proactively merge and lock threads in the newbie section. I understand completely why this isn't implemented in the other boards, and I agree, but to make this board more constructive it is a must.
If no changes are made, we are going to have spammy spamminess indefinitely. This will prove that this is not meant to be a constructive, useful place where newcomers to Silk Road (which not all of us are but that's a different story) can gain useful knowledge and best practice; but instead is a place of bullshit and nothingness.
Welcome to the Void.
-
Yeah, I got confused there for a while. Think it changes at 50 posts.
-
hum,
lets talk then
-
and indeed pgp stuff should be here, it would help me at least :)
-
Perhaps some moderator/administrator can move the threads related to PGP club in here.
But on another note... I'm not sure it's such a good idea with this newbie board. Wont it get spammed to hell?
-
its lame as fuck that we cant post in any other section. how am i expected to get the required posts without spamming?
and now newbies cant leave feedback about vendors in the correct section. only here. dumb as fuck. i understand why this section was created, just dont understand why we are locked to the newbie section only.
-
This is fucking quality. Props to DPR and the team for implementing this, I am so sick of seeing spam plastered all over the place.

Here's a guide on pgp basics.

Hmm. good point. But if the pgp thread is anywhere other than here it is going to be of little use.

They should change the definition for what newbie means. Less posts necessary or maybe taking the creation date of user into account.

Good point about the feedback, maybe 50 posts is too steep. Surely 20 or something is enough to check a members writing style and whether his name is gggfddrrffg or similar.
This is fucking quality. Props to DPR and the team for implementing this, I am so sick of seeing spam plastered all over the place.
I just hope users do not become complacent with the new sense of security that is being provided.

What the forum needs to combat spam is what every forums needs: active moderators.
-
If this means we can't post anywhere else, I'm against the idea. This isn't my first Silk Road forum account, once the password is lost the account is thrown away and I continue to remain anonymous.
If I can't join in any discussions once I've done that then I can't see my stay here being very long, I'll stick to the market itself and find somewhere else to chat.

it kinda promotes you to spam those 50 messages until you can get out of this area though... but im not complaining.
-
Nah but seriously... this is going to open the SPAM gates for all the noobs in here to get to 50 post count now.... before i was quite happy lurking and posting every now n again, more than likely something of substance, however now due to these new issues.... Let the spam commence!
-
i feel like i have been put on the naughty step
-
yeah i think it should be lowered to something like 20 posts. 50 is a bit much, some people who use SR for years possibly have fewer posts.
something needed to be done about the same questions being asked over and over though... but i think improving the wiki + stickies should have been worked on first.
-
Meh, owell... 20 posts would be nice... Like especially for people like me (however I am going a bit hard to get my post count up now) whom don't really post that much unless it's helping someone out or giving your honest feedback, or posting something with a bit of substance..... I was quite happy to sit at under 10 postcount before.... but now ugh
-
OHHHHHH i just thought.... this will maybe make it slightly harder for LE to fuck up threads and spread fear.. coz now they gotta shit here with us noobz n post aswell HAHAHAHAHAHHA FUCK U LE!!! U NEED 50 POSTS CUNT

This is fucking quality. Props to DPR and the team for implementing this, I am so sick of seeing spam plastered all over the place.
What the forum needs to combat spam is what every forums needs: active moderators.
We have VERY active moderators. I am here usually 12+ hours a day, and we all delete the spam as quickly as we notice it. That's all we can do. Only the admins have the power to delete accounts, and they get to deleting the spammers' accounts when they're able to. The rest of us moderators delete the threads as we see them. What you maybe don't realize is that the spammer posts over 100 threads a day -- way more than that, actually -- and we do what we can.
The existence of spam doesn't mean the moderators are inactive. It means we can't be on 24/7 to catch the spam as it is posted, but that we try to be on as much as we can to do that. Even when I'm on 12+ hours a day watching for spam, if I step away to get a snack from the kitchen, I can come back to 50+ new spam threads posted in the course of the 3-5 minutes I was away.
This is the same for all of us.
We're doing what we can, and we're all active moderators - we're just not active moderators who are on 24/7!
I didn't know how big the problem was with spam, but there must be a better solution than this, f.ex. to give moderators the ability give a 24 hour account ban. If the spammer can make 50+ threads in 3-5 minutes, this wont help much anyway.
-
North, you almost have 50 posts, like it matters to you lol.
-
North, you almost have 50 posts, like it matters to you lol.
It does matter. For me, the real value of the forum are the vendor-reviews. There's gonna be less of them for sure.
-
So the best way to solve the spam problem is to make a large portion of the community all spam our way alongside the spammers in order to escape the spam... sounds legit.
I'm curious to see how this uber-spam board turns out... I'll probably approve more once I'm a "real boy" and am looking down on the new proles shoveling spammy bullshit posts into big piles for sacrifice to the almighty DPR haha
-
True that, but then that means that the vendors actually have to contribute to the forums aswell, and have an active presence here, which would help boost their sales anyways.... so.... It's probably a good thing in the long run.. Plus it'd stop new scammer vendors from posting shit on the forums, they'd be found out before they can eve post in normal Rumor mill... oh just read your post properly... vendor reviews... yes... well.... I guess that'd stop the vendor from making like 50 accounts and posting that he/she is a mad cunt n got the best shit ever.
-
Yeah, this is very stupid and illogical, how the hell am I supposed to review my vendors? Isn't this mainly what the forums are meant for?
-
I guess I need 50 post now to write reviews :'(
-
Yeppppp.... it's pretty shit... but i've been going hard.... almost out of here now lol
-
unfortunately for a few trrolls this has become necessary
When one stupid fuck can write a dozen posts which completely derail a thousand fuckin page topic, by posting irrelevant shit clearly designed to try and get people to react...just go and read some of that noodooz fuckin idioy in the herion threads and you will understand
There are just SO MANY NEW thread being made, as well as others being commented in, I think what scout is saying is that in a few minutes 50+ posts can be made in 50 different threads and it's hard to physically keep on top of that :P
Moderating IS a LOT easier 'said than done' Good on the moderators here, I'm a member of a couple of smf forums and I've never seen one with 150+ members online at any time!
Yeah fifty is maybe too many, but give it a few days and they might be able to adjust it :D
how the hell am I supposed to review my vendors? Isn't this mainly what the forums are meant for?
bro and to every one else with this 'faux whinge' I'm sure there are MORE than enough customers/members giving their reviews currently, and while yours too will be greatly appreciated (if they're quality reviews) I'm SURE you to will get royally pissed off if some fuckwits starts spamming YOUR hard worked on review
And one other thing to the 'potential reviewers' PLEASE DONT START A NEW THREAD FOR A REVIEW! search the forum for the vendor or product you wish to review and there's sure to be one already started about the vendor or the drug, so PLEASE USE IT :)
Seriously, making a new topic when there's already too many peeps who have done this, and it will surely quickly get lost under the 'main threads' everyone learns to use and refer to.
please read a few of them before you decide to post in them, you will be appreciated if you do, and will piss people off if you dont
have fun everyone . . . and pgp is a piece of piss, if you can use wordpad and have ever installed some AV software, you will smoke it 8)

that's a long post. you could have split that up to get at least 5 post counts.

hi guys new to SR. I want to place my first order but i cant find out if I should be using my real address or a PO box or abandoned building.
anyone have suggestions.
-
Well shit. Was looking forward to posting some thoughtful comments in DPR's book club, but now it appears I have to post a bunch of garbage to prove I'm not a spammer.
-
whitesnaker.. you'll have to decide that for yourself. everybody has their own opinion on what they should or shouldn't do.
for me, if im buying a small amount for personal consumption, then i'll just use my address.
-

Use your real address but encrypt it using PGP when you check out.
Use the search function to find tutorials
-
the more I read this the more bullshit this section becomes ... you all are right ... how are new users able to post vendor reviews???!! that is a great point .... vendors should not be thrilled we can't post in that section!!!
-
refer to "astor" if you want to learn how to use PGP... his guide will get you set up in 10 minutes. it'll save you the headache and time.
-
Here is a link to astor's GPG4USB tutorial (which is awesome):

-
Yeah, that is actually true about the vendor thing. I have 4 different products I've promised to review to vendors.... :/
-
What other sites are worth looking at, rather than being treated like a fucking moron or scammer?
-
pretty gay i bet my sr account is older than most
-

Many forums have a "newbie section" like this -- it isn't meant to imply that you're a "fucking moron" or a scammer. In SR's case, I think it has a lot to do with cutting back on some of the spam we've been seeing, and also pushes people to search for answers (or ask them here) first. Then again, I could be wrong, but I really believe that's part of it.
-
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie who has been a vendor for 20 months. I sell Viagra, BTC, and junk silver. See my vendor page in the signature. This is fun! :)
-
ok
-
I'm a newb guiesss
-
this noob only post board is going to be a godsend for the regular forums. take that fuckn spammers.

So far, this seems to be helping the spam. Most of the other forums I belong to have newb sections so I don't think this is any big deal. Some forums pen newbies up for a predetermined amount of time (15 minutes) others go by post count. Some forums (bitcointalk.org) allow new members to petition the admins for early access to the main boards.
Sometimes we have to sacrifice a little for the greater good of the community. No complaints from me although I do wish there was a way to allow senior, non-vendor members to post here but I don't know how that would be accomplished. Astor, for example has expressed an interest in helping newbs but he is restricted from posting. Nightcrawler would probably stop by and help out as well. Those two members along with a host of others have knowledge to share and they seldom lose their tempers with newbs.
Anyway, kudos to DPR, the mods & admins for trying *something*, maybe this will solve the spam problem. Also, it's kind of nice that newbies can ask questions here without getting negged into the next universe. I have also noticed that most ppl are on their best behaviour here - that's a good thing too :)

Its only helping one form of spam - the btkoin/virwex scammers. It is hugely increasing general spam, some changes need to be made. I think the current system will have negative impacts on community as a whole.
-
This is fucking quality. Props to DPR and the team for implementing this, I am so sick of seeing spam plastered all over the place.
Only problem being is that the spammers (Bitcoin for sale!) post faster than us and will have zero issues getting to 50 posts in like 30 minutes.
-
Lucky me i had a couple of post before this. Just adding up now reading all the grieving and responding to it with meaningless posts :-\
-
PS : Can i have my silly hat + clown nose now please?

I wish older existing account would have gotten a pass...

Just stopping by

I'm newbie and I know it!

Let's thank the moderators for all of their hard work and expertise in maintaining this fine forum. +1
