Yeah, they message you if you have your profile set to show your online status.  If you have it set to hide your online status, then you usually won't be included in their spam-PMs.

If they PM you again, let me know and I'll pass the username along to the admins for deletion.

It has worked well tonight to keep the spam off of the rest of the forum!  We've deleted three different spammer accounts - all of whom were only able to post in the newbie section before they were banned.

I've started a Newbie PGP Club thread over there - hopefully the other mods will agree to letting me make it a sticky.  Some people are participating while most are spamming the section to get their 50 posts.

At least it's not the same kind of spam as the "bitcointalks" and "virwex" douche!

sm1mmer -- perfect!  want to post your pgp key so i can write you an encrypted message to decrypt?  also, you'd need to make a new one in order for it to show a different email address.

What other sites are worth looking at, rather than being treated like a fucking moron or scammer?

Many forums have a "newbie section" like this -- it isn't meant to imply that you're a "fucking moron" or a scammer.  In SR's case, I think it has a lot to do with cutting back on some of the spam we've been seeing, and also pushes people to search for answers (or ask them here) first.  Then again, I could be wrong, but I really believe that's part of it.

So, without further ado, let's carry Pine's great idea over here to the Newbie board.  It'll help you guys add to your post count while also helping to make you safer once you're released into the Wild that is SR! :)

Quote from: Pine
Are you Paralyzed by PGP?

There are clearly more people who should use PGP. Often the technology is offputting, and lots of people dilly dally, they know they should learn this stuff, but don't know how or else they procrastinate.

Fear not! Pine is here to help! (and fellow travelers! Guardian geeks of SR should join this thread to help newbs by stating: 'and my axe'...).

So this is how it works.

I will give you my public key [see my 2nd post in this thread below]. Then you guys will go and try to send me an encrypted message using my PGP public key. There are plenty of tutorials about here, on the security subforum and by googling also.

I will then reply to tell you whether you've succeeded, and also will send you an encrypted message if you give me your PGP public key. We can do this sending and receiving, encrypting and decrypting, as much as you like until you are PGP fluent.

The majority of you are probably windows users, so I suggest you locate and download GPG, this is the open source (read: free) version of PGP first thing and then hot foot it back here to send a message.

And then! And then when you know PGP, you will be cool! Really! The technical term is cyptroanarchist, which you have to admit will sound pretty fucking awesome on your business card.

So get going! Chop Chop!

--

Aside: Remember to teach at least 1 other person PGP once you've 'got it'. This is like Stalingrad comrade! Today's PGP aware SRers are like the lucky guy who actually got a rifle to work with, so do your fellow SR travelers a favor once you know and share the knowledge.

scout, is it possible one of the staff can shed a light on the comings and goings of mods? I've seen so many new mods here and a lot of old mods stripped of their powers....

You'd have to ask the admins about that - all I know is that I was given the opportunity (after many months here as a buyer and as a vendor) to help out with the forums.  Sorry that I can't shed any further light ... but remember, there are some stealth moderators too ... !

If you really want to spam, you just have to make 50 spam-posts in here, and then you can start spamming the rest of the forum.

I'm pretty sure your account will be deleted before you hit 50 spam posts. It will also be pretty easy to spot since you can only post in one forum.

Yeah, spammer accounts will be deleted hopefully before they hit 50 posts.  As usual, we can't be on 24/7, but when we're here, we usually kick spammer ass.  :D

Security / Re: Scammed out of $200 Moneypak by namedeclined
« on: January 16, 2013, 09:40 pm »
To be fair to the OP, when the OP made this thread, his moneypak had been cashed and he had not received any bitcoins for it.  When he made this thread, the vendor had not yet realized his mistake, so of course the OP felt scammed at the time.

Maybe the OP can edit the title of his thread now that things have been figured out.

I'm glad to see that everything turned out well!  I'll edit the thread title since the vendor didn't scam the OP.  OP, you can edit the title again however you see fit!

Is there any reason as to why these links are onion.to instead of just onion?  Before Guru left, he was going to look into this but he left before doing so. There are some trust issues with onion.to sites and he was vocal about using such links very cautiously until he had looked at them first. I'm just asking the question and am not trying to alarm anyone.

As LouisCyphre wrote:
"Since these posts can also be useful elsewhere, here are the clearnet links for them.  Using Tor is preferable, but a TLS/SSLv3 connection may be the best of a bad situation sometimes"

So, that's why he posted the .to links equivalent to the onion sites he linked to in the initial post.
