My solution?  This policy was created by DPR - the same person who made this place possible.  It was not created by me, nor did I have any input in the decision.  However, it has ended up helping a LOT.  There's nothing I can do to "advance" a user out of this requirement, sorry.

Short answer is that I don't think you can change your username.  If you really need something different, you may just need to start a new account ... but that would take some work since you'd have to start fresh with 0 posts.

The "official" reason is that DPR and the admins decided to implement this policy in order to give us a better change to combat the "virwex" "btkoin" "mtgix" "bitcointalks" bitcoin spam which was causing a lot of users to lose money.  This way, we are able to notice, identify, and delete the accounts before they are able to flood the rest of the forums and scam more people.

Yeah, it usually takes a few hours.  And like dfghxcv mentioned, it's a good idea to check blockchain.info to see that the transaction shows up.  If it doesn't show up, then you need to message SR Support.

this has been a hell of a week / weekend on the forums, and just tonight someone messaged me to say they negged me ( -karma ) because i pointed out the secret question / secret answer thing on the Western Union form for people who don't want to use IDs ... which i'm pretty sure is common knowledge since it explains that option directly on the Western Union send money form itself! 

anyway, straw that broke this camel's back.
