Also, I have no idea how people are being targeted - in part because I don't have access to see who all received the messages.  I don't know if it was just targeting a few specific vendors/users, or what.

But the messages are being sent via the SR messaging system, which doesn't show who is or is not online ... right?  Only the forums show online status, IIRC.
