Title: Lost Bitcoin Wallet Passphrase. $500 bounty
Post by: tcobambientAgain on September 15, 2013, 04:39 am
I know it's supposed to be impossible to retrieve or decrypt a lost passphrase but just wondering if anyone has a way of doing this?   Willing to pay $500 to whoever can make this happen.

Google Bitcoin wallet passphrase cracking. There are methods and programs to do it, though as can be expected it's an inefficient process.

That sucks. When I first started on SR, I sent coins through BitCoinFog and as soon as I did, I forgot the password I used. Gone forever. Lesson learned. Also, don't be high when creating passwords related to financial transactions. Protip! haha

@@@@@@@@@@@@@Don't do that dude!!@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
These are programs that acutally infect your computer and may take personal info/passwords and logins.
It would need some really good computer bruteforcing the pass throught...

Lot's of articles on bitcointalk.org how to do this but it depends, how big was your passphrase?

My passphrase was probably around 10 characters and I've tried everything I can think of.  I've searched Google about working on this.  I just figured there had to be someone out there who had a tool that could decrypt your wallet.dat file or something.  People crack shit all the time so I figured this couldn't be as hard as everyone says it is.  Apparently it is and I'm fucked.

Anyway, thanks.  If anyone has something I'd gladly hand over $500 in bitcoins.

Yeah, that's a REAL good way to get a keylogger.

"John the Ripper" may help. But I don't know how long it would take to crack a 10 character password with it. Depends on if you used numbers and punctuation.

Happened to me once. I left it alone and the pword came back to me one day. I'd try to relax and forget about it and maybe it will pop back into your mind. Now I keep every pword in an encrypted notepad file. It's important to write it down as soon as you make one.

Yeah.  I learned my lesson on that.  I keep all of my passwords in a safe spot now.

I'd probably be reading more into memory and brain function then how to brute force attack encryption. Maybe there are exercises or foods or activities that can relax your memory part of your brain a bit. I'd probably leave it alone for a day, get some good sleep, then go for a peaceful walk and see if it hits you.

What wallet were you using?  Different wallets require different approaches to retrieve or decrypt a lost passphrase.  So providing that important bit of information will aid anyone who might be able to help in determining how likely they are to be able to assist.

^^^ Good advice

Most of my pass words are a random selection of words, numbers and punctuation that have to be stored safely on encrypted media, there is no chance of my remembering a 20 character string however if your password was something a little more memorable that you have just forgotten I'd definitely be taking DrMDA's advice, you have a slim to none chance of cracking the encryption code, you should be concentrating on that super computer between your ears instead ;)

Do you remember the first few digits of your password?  If you can remember the first 4 or so digits it becomes much, much easier to brute force.

What wallet are you using?

Just contact the NSA!  They'll crack it for you.

Do you use words, special characters, upper case chars, numbers in your passwords? What special characters, what words?
Any details can help to mask attack the password

That's the problem.  If I knew the first few digits I'd have no problem figuring it out.  Back in the day when I created the wallet (Nov 2011) I was just using words and probably a couple of numbers at the end.  Probably 8-10 characters.
