Title: Scientists prove: 95% of ALL Tor Users can be identified after 3 months of Sniff
Post by: Acen on September 05, 2013, 07:58 am
Hello people.
i just read this @ http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Tor-Benutzer-leicht-zu-enttarnen-1949449.html (german) and the paper from the scientists can be found here: http://www.ohmygodel.com/publications/usersrouted-ccs13.pdf

I think this is pretty scary for people like DPR and the really BIG vendors here... I think IF they want to fuck up SilkRoad these people will be the first who will be identified then. I am pretty shocked that TOR is *not* that safe as i thought all the time.

The question is: If i still want to be safe, is it possible to first connect to a non-logging anon VPN and then to TOR. AFAIK this is not possible, right? CozĀ“ this would be the only way i can think of to *still* remain anonymous.

Any thoughts on this anyone? :)

AirVPN does not log anything and you can subscribe with BTC.

I think this is a bit misleading.  I won't pretend to have read the entirety of this.  I just read a discussion about it on reddit and it seems that it's not exactly as scary as it's made out to be.  There are a lot of factors that are involved.  But it's important to decide for yourself... just don't jump to conclusions without understanding exactly what is being said here.  What does "identify" mean exactly for example?  Identify the IP connecting to Tor, or identify the actual person or computer being used.

If you're connecting first to a VPN and then to Tor, they will have gotten the public IP of your VPN.   That's hardly what I'd call "identifying the Tor User".  Identifying the tor user, to me, would be saying this data belongs to John Doe.

That said, it's definitely advisable to add at least one hop between you and Tor, by using a VPN.  Though there are much more thorough methods on these forums that I would defer to.  This is from a buyers perspective.  I doubt they're interested in buyers but who wants to feel paranoid?   Also it doesn't prevent malware from spying on you, it just prevents your IP from being established through some Tor analysis attack.   So the OS you run, the practices you employ to keep it clean and stay safe, all important.  Security is only as good as the weakest link.

I actually wouldn't open that .pdf, not my favorite file type to be honest - if anyone wants to post a text version that would be very kind.

Listen, I don't want to scare you, but the government is a couple steps ahead of us on this one. Everything is being watched and recorded, and in all likelyhood they know what's going on. Now, who will they go after first? Big vendors. Next? Big buyers (traffickers) Then, medium buyers (distribution), lastly, the lil guys. That's my opinion, anyways. Been here two years, never resold anything, no large orders, so I'd guess I'm way down the list, which they'll probably not make it that far.
