1.  Go buy a few books with digital download.  They're about $1 each and familiarize you with the ordering and finalizing process.  They also put you one (albeit small) step above all the new buyers with $0 purchased.

2.  Use the ratings to confirm vendors you DON'T want to buy from.  A vendor with a bad rating or rank and lots of complaining customers obviously isn't making up the reviews himself.  Remember how easy if was for you to create an SR account? Well it's that easy for vendors to do the same and buy their own product.

3.  Use the forums as your primary research tool, and trust the review of people with positive karma and over 100 posts.

4.  Notice shady stuff, like a new vendor creating a review thread and lots of brand new forum members with 51 posts all praising the transaction.

5.  As long as you start with an order under $100, you should be able to stay in escrow.  If not, buy the cheapest stuff you can.

You've got to be vigilant, it's a crazy world here in Torland. 8)

EDIT:  As far as drjohnhalpern goes, I'd stay away.

Start small, start domestic and as the post above states use the forums like your bible. Vendor ratings can and are manipulated through shill buyer accounts so do not take them as gospel.

Buying books etc doesn't really help your states as even though you may have clocked up a few transactions the total amount spent is very low. My advise would be to enter into a dialogue with the vendor first, build some rapport and go from there. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding vendors who will allow you to stay in escrow.
