Title: maintenance
Post by: Dread Pirate Roberts on April 23, 2013, 08:27 pm
UPDATE (04/25/2013 0445 UTC): Silk Road is available at the moment.  This has been truly epic.  I pray this is the end for a while.  I need sleep.  I will make a summary announcement once I've had some rest and am sure this is behind us.

UPDATE (04/24/2013 2220 UTC): We're making progress.  The site has been open and available for about 15 minutes, but this is an arms race right now, and the attacker may still get the upper hand before we have our final victory.  I've paused autofinalizing, and will leave it that way for a few days after I feel everyone has had a chance to send their orders to the Resolution Center if they want to.  Also, image uploading doesn't work for the time being.

UPDATE (04/24/2013 1647 UTC): Nothing new to report, but I just thought I'd let everyone know that I am still here and we're doing everything we can to put and end to all of this.  I'm really proud to be a part of this community.  You all have been showing your class through all of this.

UPDATE (04/24/2013 1222 UTC): We are starting to get a handle on how the attack is being run.  It will likely take many hours to eventually overcome, but we are 100% committed to getting the site running in peak form again.  It is still possible to access here and there, so we are leaving the site open for those who want to try to gain access, but it will be tough until we can effectively counter the attack.

UPDATE (04/24/2013 0714 UTC): The downtime of the past couple days, and especially the past 24 hours has been confirmed to be due to a deliberate attack from what appears to be an individual.  There appears to be no security breach, only disruption of availability.  The attack appears to be DoS in nature and is likely an exploit at the Tor network level.  The site will be down or very slow until a solution can be found, which we will work tirelessly to find.  Thank you for your patience.

UPDATE (04/23/2013 2319 UTC): I'm terribly sorry for the poor availability over the last few days, and especially today.  I'm having to take the site down again and we will likely be up and down for a while longer.  Sorry I can't give you anything more specific, but we are working as hard as we can to find a solution.

We are doing some server reconfiguration to try to improve availability.  The site will be down while this is done, but I will keep you updated via this thread.  Thanks for your patience.

Hey Rob o/

Thx for the info and while I'm thanking you already: BIG THX for all the work you're doing here -- and you're doing it great!

Any estimation how long it'll take to get the SR back rolling?

Rock on dude o/

Light & Love,
∞aliaseses∞

EDIT @FPUK
Maybe Rob's got a life besides SR as well and the beginning of the week is the time, he's most able to do this kind of work for all of us?! Imo your question is a bit strange -- do you think 'week(-days)' are the same for you and me and everyone? I also heard about maintenance isn't the kind of thing that's waiting patient until everybody's ready to be confronted with but rather a thing that 'just comes' and when it's time for it, it doesn't care if it's a monday or thursday or whateverday ;->

Everything will be good and work well in the end ... it always does one just have to recognize ;->

LOL @ SLASH!!

Its been super slow the last 4 to 5 days..really since it came up from the last time u took it down..

Before that, to me it was running for me faster and smoother than i had ever seen it in a year.. I read some claim they could never log on for 3 days iv never had to log my info in more than 2 times and im in and cruising down the road..lol

Why dont u guys DPR and Team just keep it down fix every thing that needs to be fixed, so u dont have to do this every 4 days.. If it needs to be down 2 days ppl deal with it and let it be worked on, iv got a few things on order so i know its annoying but so is this every few day thing.. and taking 15 min to read a PM and reply to one or load a page// thanks DPR AND TEAM...

Post by: NW Nugz on April 23, 2013, 08:43 pm
Thanks for the effort however it goes :-)

If it does not work, please make it so messages load before the page headers so
we can get work done without waiting for headers and search bars etc. which take forever at times. Also, if it is within your power, let us look at one page while another one is loading. ATM, if you don't pay attention to a blank loading page, it will give up and never load. Very tedious. But, I am happy we can do things even if they are slower than a glacier :-)  NWN

DPR needs to give us pre warning knowing how volitile the market it nowadays. we could be losing money while waiting on the site to go back up

Always good to have a heads up. Maintenance is a necessary evil to improve the SR.

Purchasing bitcoins is always a gamble. It's part of the game. I'm sure the site will be back up before the btc drops fom $130 to £55  ;)

It could be worse, he could care fook all about the site and not update anything, and let it scrum up and die slowly. Or he could not give us ANY updates...i appreciate the time he takes to keep us informed, knowing how busy he probably is.  Downtime sucks for anything, but we all know it will be back sooner or later. So just hit refresh once in awhile, works for me ;)

Oh well shit happens. Remember, this is fuckin wall street. you did what you had to do.  There's nothing that we can do about it. Best thing is to wait for site to go back up. Come on Lorax, how long you been on the road for? I know you're not a n00bie. Patience is a virtue.  Believe me i'm the most inpatient person,  but if theres anything I've learned from the road is to have patience.

I have over 10k sitting in escrow still processing for over 2 weeks now.  I can cancel at any time I want to but I chose not too...It is what it is.

I actually don't mind all this maintenance, at least we know were being take care of. DPR is taking all the precautions to make sure the site is safe.

I'd rather they take the site down to fix a technical issue and maintain all of it's user's security and anonymity then to just leave it up with a known problem so that the haters stay happy.

A bit of frustration perhap's, but i'd rather you guy's keep the site as secure as possible (least you can do for the insane amount of money you've made off seller fee's as well

[PS: You gouge us WAY too heavily in seller fee's, I mean way too high, I lose SOO much money for seller fee's, and you guy's gotta be rich as fuck from all the sales made now over the last 2 year's, I think it's time you give us a break/cut in fee's cuz like ... you're obviously millionaires now off fee's and it takes sooo much out of every order unless you're a huge vendor :( ]

But all you hater's should go down to your local police station right now and just turn yourselves in, because you clearly don't care about protecting yourselves on a stable, technically sound and secure drug through the mail distribution network (Silk Road !).

Those of us who enjoy our freedom appreciate any interruption required to fix a flaw/weakness/exploitable element to Silk Road and thank you guy's maintaining it's upkeep for jumping on these problem's as soon as you can instead of leaving them wide open until you can prepare us for 'Scheduled Maintenance'.  Letting everyone know when you plan on scheduling a maintence is pretty silly too considering all the LE's sniffing around constantly and looking for any intelligence whatsoever to aid them in trying to take SR down.

No one should know when you PLAN on taking SR down, that's how one would shoot themselves in the foot by giving LEOs intelligence, which is the most powerful thing LEOs have to stop/prevent/immobilize in this case a drug network that must be frustrating them a little bit more every day that passes and SR is still running without their ability to do dick about it.

So thank you technical staff for keeping Silk Road running smoothly.

Strange all these reports though from ppl who've been saying they've not been able to access the site for the last 4 days.  I've personally been on there conducting business up until today when the login page has finally been replaced with their 'under maintenance' page ... at least for me ... have there really been people trying to login 4 day's ago and been met with the maintenance page vs. the login page?

Or are you guys complaining about 4 day's talking about the site being slow, but still accessible?  That as well puzzles me cuz it's been going quick as normal for me up until today and I'm definitely not anyone special lol..

HAha yea most def know how you feel! And I was able to log in, but its extremely slow. I'm done for the day, like you said everyone is going to overload the servers and it's just gonna be a complete waste of time to attempt logging in.

GOOD LUCK on your order! and most importantly . stay safe.

So are you saying that your angry that you can't cancel an order you've made to instead sell those BTC for your own personal profit while screwing the vendor over by cancelling your order for no other reason then you want your BTC back to sell to make some profit?

That's pretty greedy and wrong to do to a vendor you committed an order to.

Should turn off your cap's lock bro/sis, and treat your responsibilities to the vendor when you placed a $3500 order with them appropriately.

I know i'd be blacklisting buyers who made a commitment to a vendor and are angry that they can't flake out on it by cancelling their order to get their BTC back out of escrow just to make some market trades for profit.  If you want to trade for profit then don't commit all your BTC to a vendor and then back out on them like that for your own personal desires vs. a legitimate reason for cancelling an order you made with the vendor.

Don't you see how wrong your intentions are and how you're screwing the vendor over when you should really only cancel an order when you actually have legitimate reason to?

CAPS LOCK, TURN IT OFF

HAha yea most def know how you feel! And I was able to log in, but its extremely slow. I'm done for the day, like you said everyone is going to overload the servers and it's just gonna be a complete waste of time to attempt logging in.

GOOD LUCK on your order! and most importantly . stay safe.

PE@CE

so its up? is that what im gathering from all this? because i keep getting timed out:P is that due to a server overload?

DPR needs to give us pre warning knowing how volitile the market it nowadays. we could be losing money while waiting on the site to go back up

This. What is so hard about giving a heads up in relation to scheduled maintenance?

UPDATE (04/23/2013 2319 UTC): I'm terribly sorry for the poor availability over the last few days, and especially today.  I'm having to take the site down again and we will likely be up and down for a while longer.  Sorry I can't give you anything more specific, but we are working as hard as we can to find a solution.

We are doing some server reconfiguration to try to improve availability.  The site will be down while this is done, but I will keep you updated via this thread.  Thanks for your patience.

Hey thanks for the update, we really do appreciate them, but when is doing maintenance and changing configurations around just not working anymore? I actually had to push my sales IRL due to the sites availability and speed. I just can't spend hours in front of a computer hitting reload/refresh over and over. I am aware that tor networks are inherently slow to begin with, but when it looks like the 300 baud days with a dial up modem things have to change. :)

@HOLLY

WTF ARE U TALKING ABOUT?
THATS THE BAD PART.. I HAVE 3500 DOLLARS SITTING IN FUCKING ESCROW WHEN I COULD BE MAKING A COUPLE HUNDRED DOLLARS..

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE..

AND I BET THE VENDER DIDNT EVEN SEND IT OUT.. I ORDERED AT LIKE 7 AM SO IDK ..

FUCK

ARE U FUCKING RETARDED? BITCH DONT EVER TELL ME TO DO SHIT ILL KEEP EM ON AND U WILL READ THIS COCKBREATH

I NEVER SAID I WAS GUNNA CANCEL SHIT.. I WOULD NEVER DO THAT BULLSHIT BITCH IVE SPENT SO MUCH MONEY ON HERE AND HAVE SEVERAL TOP VENDERS KNOW FOR A FACT I WILL BUY BULK AND NEVER BULLSHIT WHEN I TELL THEM I NEED SOMETHING I GET FUCKING CUSTOM ORDERS AND I WOULD NEVER CANCEL TO MAKE AN EXTRA COUPLE BUCKS

what im saying is that if i would of waited to place the order ( since the site is down anyways and the vender would not be able to ship today anyways)
i would of made some extra money by ordering 2maro or even now..

i never said i would cancel .. not only are u a jackass for assuming that since we have to wait 4 days to cancel.. ur a dipshit for trying to talk shit to someone when u cant fucking read and understand a situation before commenting go die

wtf are u some kind of newfriend or something?

assume a dick in ur ass next time u question my integrity u fucking ass clown..

But you didn't wait to order today or tomorrow.  You ordered when you did, before maintenamce. You entered into a contract when you placed the order with the vendor.  He has 4 days to ship your product. This is the rule. Ignorance is no excuse.

Trying to cancel the order would be breaching the contract.  So you're stuck. Plesse STOP BITCHING on DPR's main maintenance thread.

Buy a better crystal ball or build a time machine.

If you guys are really hurting so badly because silk road is down for less than 24 hours, you NEED to diversify your business. Silk Road is not guaranteed to exist forever. Its a nice (FREE) service that the pirate man has brought us. And it helps bring lots of customers (many naive to the risks they are taking) to vendors. But if you are drawing ALL your customers from silk road, and not from private parties or boards, then you are asking to have your tits explode when Silk Road goes away for whatever reason.

If you think this business of internet drugs started with silk road, then you are the naive fool.

ive been on sr long before i got on these forums and i can tell u one thing downtime like this aint shit..

its all part of the game.. it will be back up and waiting sucks.. no matter what u guys say.. venders are loosing money so are re sellers..

its perfectly normal to be upset about a order getting fuck or not being able to finalize for a vender.. or a vender not being able to send orders or get there money ..

but shit .. this is a thread to simply keep up updated.. so i guess there is no point in doing anything but subbing to it and checking the op every now and then..

anyways.. u can all suck my dick..

DPR takes a healthy cut on every transaction. Hardly a 'for free' proposition for vendors. IMO they're entitled to vent a bit when they get days of terrible, 14.4k modem speed slowdown, followed by unannounced maintenance. BTC volatility of late doesn't help things any. To be honest I can't even begin to imagine how any vendor with volume actually manages to use SR successfully without using custom tools that let them effectively do their business offline, syncing things up with the server when it is actually available.

It happens  ;D

And if a certain customer is waiting, we had connection issues at our end (shit isp) and then we had SR issues so unable to message anyone waiting. One customer is waiting for a refund on an oz of bud canceled. We will compensate with a free send out.

Everyone else should be sorted.

Hope the site is up soon.

free? there is a 7-10% fee on all transactions. the SR according to a report does 1.9 million a month. that means DPR is roughly making 200K per month or a little over 2 million dollars a year. how is that providing a free service?

Hey DPR, I don't know if you go through and read these threads, but I want to thank you for all the hard work you keep this amazing site up and working. I can assure you that the naysayers are in the minority. The rest of us know that we have done nothing to deserve this paradise you maintain, and we completely respect you. You deserve all the money you get!

Seriously people, you shouldn't be panicking. I remember my most panicky moment was when the forums went down and the site wasn't loading. That was the closest I ever got to thinking the site was gone forever, and even then I had hope that everything was fine. Here, we have actual updates from the man himself and you're complaining to him? Go smoke a bowl and take a day's rest from ordering drugs to your doorstep. You're lucky to have that opportunity at all.

It took me a couple of times too, and the connection is not consistent right now even when I'm logged in, so my guess is that either the servers are overloaded with people just getting back onto the site after it being down for the day, or there are still issues, or something I'm not thinking about... but yes, there are some intermittent outages at the moment.

I have never smoked DMT while on shrooms Im afraid. I am a bit scared of the possible intensity and on shrooms you dont really have a very good headspace which I think could make it turn very sour! MDMA is the only thing I have ever combined with dmt. Also I have found Mushrooms are a very nice thing to take just after a large MDMA dose :)

I'm not going to bother reading all 7+ pages of this, so I have no clue what's been said.  I just thought I'd mention that I like the way you're handling the situation, DPR.  The notice on the site is a nice touch.  Really, things like that go a long way.

I mean for whatever the comment is worth: not that you should give a fuck what I think, really, but since I tend to be rather critical of you I think it only fair to mention the times when I think you handle things well too.

Post some IP's for people to start working with. . . .
A  return attack will work if we can know which doorstep to send the shitstorm to.  There are resources that can help.

Now, I am not a computer scientist, geek, or hacker..... but something you said made me think.  Endpoints can resolve ip addresses correct?

SR is the "endpoint" in this situation....
Now, the DDOS uses a botnet of a large quantity to achieve this attack.  With this being said, the attacker is hidden behind the multitude of ip addresses which are packeting the server....  I believe, with the way the net works these days, that this attack would have to be substantial.  The sheer number of connections would make finding the perp responsible difficult, if not almost impossible.  Like I said, I am not a computer expert.... I ddosed a game server once.... took less that twenty bots..... so i do know the concept.  Im just not sure how to find the ip address of the attacker...  I know the attacker has to give commands to the bots attacking.   How could you get the ip from the attacking (bot) computer?

Sometimes I can't see the big picture..... this is why i decided hacking was not my gig, and moved on (plus my first 'threat' from the 'fbi' at the age of thirteen scared the shit outta me.)

Just curious how much has changed in the past 12-15 years....

GUYS, I've seen these happen and things go way slow (and of course, very fast and normal) throughout the past 3-4 days and i was just "shopping" then for my next order (i make about 2 a month). Today was different.

I had my bitcoins loaded faster than usual and i had to break my 6-order shopping cart into pieces to send specific stuff to each vendor. Well, that took FOREVER. And I had JUST officially finished the last order and sent it through like 10 mins before the 100% shut down.

So, is there a chance I could lose all those orders all ready sent off? I mean my bitcoins went with each order....

I'm just saying that'd be worst case scenario, I know. But my orders are safe and in the hands of the vendors, right?

I mean SR has been fully down for over two at least now.....will we see the light soon?

What do you guys think??

thx

The site goes down on a pretty regular basis, and every time has happened in the past, the admins have given people extra time to finalize orders. I don't expect this time to be any different, so you should be fine.

Take your time boss, you know we all love you, despite some stupid hatters who are really stupid and dont apreciate all the work u do, we'll wait until its up and live again.

What do you guys think??

thx

Interesting that you say it's some sort of DoS attack and appears to be coming from one individual, I was just getting my daily fix of thehackernews.com and saw this article:

http://thehackernews.com/2013/04/who-needs-botnet-when-you-have-4-gbps.html

Sorry if the formatting is bad, that's why I provided link

Quote
In recent months the DDoS world has shifted from complex small scale Botnet attacks to much larger network based DDoS attacks, perpetrated largely by hijacked web servers.

How many of these hijacked servers are out there remains to be seen. However, Incapsula recently got a very good idea of just how large these DDoS cannons are getting.

Last Saturday Incapsula mitigated a rather small, 4Gbps DDoS attack, but this time it had a different pattern that attracted our attention.
At first sight the attack seemed rather simple, generating 8 million DNS queries per second, to many domains, from spoofed IP addresses (using real domain name servers’ IPs). But this time it included a hint about where it was coming from: all that traffic was coming from the same source. Probably on the same network, maybe even the same device.

Tracing it to a single Source - TTL Giveaway
Incapsula were able to trace the attack to a single source because this time the attackers slipped-up and did not randomize the requests TTLs, making all the traffic arrive with the same IP TTL.

The TTL parameter is part of the Internet Protocol. It’s a field that designates how many routers a packet is allowed to pass before it expired. Every router along the way decrements the counter, until it expires (many diagnostic tools, like traceroute use this attribute). Of course, like many other fields, its value can be spoofed and randomized, but it is almost impossible to make millions of packets from many sources have the same TTL when they reach their destination and this is exactly what Gur Shatz, Incapsula CEO and Co-Founder saw.

Are Authoritative Name Servers next on the exploit list?
Another interesting point Incapsula saw, is that the spoofed addresses belonged to DNS servers, but not all were open DNS resolvers. In fact, many of these IPs were of authoritative name servers.

The reason for the non-random selection of IPs was to avoid blacklisting mechanisms. But it means that hackers are also collecting information about authoritative name servers. Using these in reflection attacks is a bit more complicated (it means building a database of domains with large DNS responses), with much smaller amplification factor, but they are much more difficult to lock down than open DNS resolvers.

So... what does this mean?
This means that the stakes just got higher. Just for comparison, at the rate of this attack, if it had used DNS amplification, with an average amplification factor of 50 - it would have generated a 200+ Gbps DDoS attack, all from a single source/computer!

What do we know about this source?

It is either custom hardware, or a cluster of machines sharing the same network. It is (almost) impossible for a single machine to generate this kind of traffic.
It could utilize 4Gbps of upstream bandwidth, without anyone noticing.

These days it doesn’t take a Botnet to launch massive DDoS attacks. It doesn’t even take hundreds of servers, from multiple hosting providers. That kind of massive firepower can be obtained from a single DDoS Cannon, from a single location and perhaps even one single server.

I'm really worried this time. The tone DPR used in his latest update sounded kind of fatalistic. Like he was going to give it all he had, but feeling defeatist.

Maybe I'm wrong, I sure hope I am.

Anyway, how can one guy cause a DOS? Would they need tremendous resources and bandwitdth, etc?

You should be good.  I managed to get to my 'orders' page this morning as there were some new ones in there from last night/this morning.  I left that tab open and went about trying to reply to messages.  Luckily I had that tab still open because minutes after I got that page open SR went down and I haven't been able to get anything since.  I think I managed to reply to one message.

Now, whether I can confirm those orders as sent or not... we'll see.  People might have 'em in their hands before it's confirmed  :P

Hope this attack is stopped soon and they blow up the guy who's initiating it.
I just started business 1.5 weeks ago and was doing pretty damn well until this unexpected little surprise.]

I noticed a week ago the site also wasn't terribly fast. I know tor is slow because of the routing, but it seems SR is especially slow compared to other darknet sites. Was it always like this, or has the recent exponential increase in traffic had a noticeable effect? Just curious.

Pay the black mail they want to stop it and move on.  (Just kidding, as if)

But the timing is interesting.  Coins at a high value, 420 is going on, - but it's related to bitcoins more than anything.  I wonder what the motive is?  Raise or lower coin prices?  Drive customers to other sites where they are funneled into less secure environments making easier targets?  Tor mail being down is a direct attack on sr users and vendors for sure.

Mysteriously, other drug sites are up and fine. Like I said,  to funnel the whole herd into these alternate choices for business.  Like someone wants to rustle us out of the bushes and out into the open.

Ah, speculation and imagination.  I'm high.  Killing time until the stores open up.

Glad everyone is showing the attackers we are brave and not angry. Be brave and strong.  Wait it out. It can't go on forever.

Tor does not scale well for a DDOS.

Get 'em DPR!

Sure this is only a DDOS? When reaching server getting 500 errors and the above error ^^ (We could not process..)

Tor does not scale well for a DDOS.

Get 'em DPR!

500 errors are usually caused when the server can't talk to the backend (php).  During a DDoS, the web server may still respond, but the backend is all clogged up and not available to respond to requests in time, thus the web server throws a 500 error so you at least get a response.

A couple people mentioned getting www., I'm getting it again too.  It's not a security concern, no one needs to worry about it there, but Tor will NOT connect you to the site if www. is in front of the url.  So once you realize your browser shows www., delete it and try to access the page again (instead of refreshing on www. which will never go anywhere).  I think most modern browsers try the www. form of websites second if they're not able to communicate with the form you typed in, which may just indicate that a couple of the services weren't reachable when you tried to login.

Yes, correct, that is the concern. The backend server should not be a known ip/onion address, so should be available while the webserver is not. If the backend server is being attacked, that is a problem for a few reasons and points to a more sophisticated attack then simple DDOS.

As mentioned a few times in earlier posts, there are resources out there that can help.  We just need to know which IP(s) to send the shit storm to, or some clue where to start and they will take it from there.

There is no way the attacker could compete against several corporate server racks on fibre circuits in different cities.   Bot nets in waiting too. Like a poster mentioned earlier (wazo?) there are people itching to direct the entire corporate network resources onto some poor asshole.  Point the way boss. . .  and take yourselves a much needed toke break.   :-)

Lots of support and minions waiting, but I think the boss has it covered.

I'm getting error message at the checkout page.
Once I press enter after typing my pin number, I am directed to a page which states " an error has occurred, we could not process your request ( ext) "

I'm guessing there's a bug, or a malfunction with an extension in that area of the server.

Anybody else not able to add items to order page? Anyone else getting this same error message, or was anyone successful at adding an item to his/her order page?

Did the site work fine once you logged in?  Most people seem to still be getting kicked out, just curious if it was running fine for you once you got in.

Yes, I was able to get into sr, and it must have been in the 15 timeframe where dpr noted he was.putting the.server back up about 1.5 hrs ago, approximately.
I logged in, browsed for about 10 minutes with quite a bit of lag.
I.proceeded to add an item to my cart. Updated shipping. Typed pin. Was then redirected to.error page, saying my request couldn't be processed(ext).

After about 25 minutes of lagtown USA, I decided to give it a rest.

Anybody have an IP addy or any info of this fucker who used the ddos? Really, why.would you.ddos Sr? The one oasis of beauty left...and someone dare try to.take it?

Really is frustrating but I must commend dpr and everyone for updating us accordingly, and attempting to.find the source of the current issues. I have no doubt we will prevail. .. in time.

Yes, correct, that is the concern. The backend server should not be a known ip/onion address, so should be available while the webserver is not. If the backend server is being attacked, that is a problem for a few reasons and points to a more sophisticated attack then simple DDOS.

I think you misunderstood the ambiguous term 'server' (so there actually is not some larger thing afoot, it's all Tor and 100% has to be because of the nature of the attack).  Not actually a separate machine, but 'server' meaning 'daemon', or service running on the physical machine.  So apache (or whatever webserver) is the 'front end' and then PHP/ASP/other languages then get handed off requests and are the 'back end'.  They're almost always running on the same machine (even if you have it clustered to many machines, they're usually all hosting a web daemon + serverside processor language).

I love that everyone is asking for IPs and wants to get revenge.  Unfortunately, I think you guys are forgetting that you use Tor for it's anonymity, so the ONLY IPs that SR's server records, is the Tor one used to connect to it, the same IP many legit users are connecting through.  You can't overload a .onion HTTP server (daemon) unless you're actually making HTTP calls over Tor (otherwise it cannot be routed).  The same reason everyone here is "protected", is the reason this attacker's real identity is "protected".  It sucks, but it's the double edged sword of the protocol.

This stunt has cost this place a lot of money.  Luckily everyone will still buy, just a few days later.

CIA not DEA...they sold guns to Iran and took the money to fund the Contra in Nicaragua to fight those terrible communists. The CIA allowed the Contra to smuggle tons of cocaine into Cali, starting the crack epidemic in LA. (See Rick Ross)

Jeff, trust we fully understand this thing and possible keep thing simple to appeal to more person and to keep our skill in wrap.  ;D

web server is nginx here, btw.

we not analyze anything here, have no time and others on task, simple ask is only a DDOS because we see some things that point to maybe more high level attack + DDOS. For discussion  ;)

DPR probably take down hidden service form network, so address not routable and your browser (think FF do this) add www to search for URL.

Not a tech guy, but the consensus seems to be this was a DDOS? Seems a fishy conclusion to me. The site's been running like shit these past few days including frequent time-outs.

In every single case in this thread where people offer an opinion as to how something seems "fishy" or "sketchy", what follows or precedes that is gibberish and/or magical thinking, with some drug-induced paranoia sprinkled in for good measure. If you're not a tech guy, it stands to reason that your theories on tech topics are probably 1) wrong and 2) only adding to general confusion / noise when shared. As is true of any theories I might develop on topics such as nuclear physics, automotive repair, and so on.

The person you are quoting doesn't know what he's talking about, so I don't know why you're parroting it so authoritatively. The blind leading the blind? DDOS attacks are hardly limited to malformed packets and do not require UDP, SYN, or anything else he mentioned in an attempt to bedazzle with his bullshit.

slowloris, Slow POST, Slow Read, Range Header attacks - all examples of application layer attacks on HTTP, which can most certainly be both distributed and cause denial of service.

The claim that this is a null byte attack due to shitty coding on DPR's part is interesting, as I saw it mentioned by someone hyping Atlantis on another thread before I saw this supergenius you've quoted relaying the same theory. Pure speculation. And speculation which seems very much linked to a general "SR code sucks, come to Atlantis for the bootstrap web3.0 hawtness" campaign that someone seems eager to spread.

so whats goin on with sr ddos attack? damn i hope this dont mean the end of it, altho the end is inevitable. unfortunately. damn....that brings me to this topic, in the event of sr's downfall has anyone thought up of some sr back up site? like something that people can flock to if sr is down forever, enter yr sr username and password or some sort of special code or something thatd allow you to transfer yr sr stats. thatd be nice if you could transfer yr sr stats to lets say a sister site or something.....thatd be really helpful so people know yr reputation and know yr shit....sorta like an id for the anonymous realm. of course, containing only purchasing stats hahaha, the sister site should also OBVIOUSLY have an escrow system implemented of course.....damn im just rambling sorry man hahaha just thought id get this out there cuz ive been thinking a lot about "wtf would i do without sr" my city has shitty fucking sources, sr is a blessing

It is redirecting my browser to have a www. in front of the address. Is this exposing my ip address?
this is happening to me as well

Same here

Yip.. same..

www.silkroad

No, adding www. is just your browser (probably Firefox / TorBrowser) timing out and trying alternate. It's a known TorBrowser bug (but hasn't been fixed for some reason).

I feel very, VERY safe in saying that I know a great deal more about TOR, HTTP, TCP/IP, PHP, and just about every other moving part involved in this sort of thing than you do. Not as sure about the throwaway account who you are quoting - I'm thinking there's some malicious intent behind some of this disinfo, and that some people spouting bullshit know full well that they're doing it. The rest are just paranoid sheep willing to latch onto any contrarian "we are being lied to" explanation that is on offer for any given event.

Starved for good entertainment tonight though. Do explain how these hardly-new application layer techniques are magically blocked by TOR. Or how it can be known by anybody with any certainty that this involves a null byte attack on ancient PHP. I'm waiting.

Hey, who knows. That could be true and maybe finally Silkroad has come to its end. No more. Yea, sucks for A LOT of people. I have over $800 worth of bitcoin in there but hey, who gives a shit if the feds are involved I guess. What I think may have happened is the feds couldn't take down SR using its conventional ways, so they opted to choose this way. Just keep slamming the site, non stop, basically until DPR just gives up. It was bound to happen. I'll be very curious as to see what the news will be....if anything. News isn't 9am-5pm EST anymore. It is 24/7/365 so not seeing anything until morning does make the comment above a little suspect. Also, not hearing back from DPR could be a good sign he's transferring ALL available bitcoin on SR to his own addresses and getting his plane ticket ready!! :)

That is a post from an obvious troll.  It was posted from a single post throwaway troll account too.  Do you believe everything that you read online?  If you do then here are some instructions on how to fly.

From yahoo answers,
Quote
Go running every day until you can run really fast - preferably at least 60mph. Then climb to the top of a really tall building - you need a lot of lift, chose a windy, sunny day to get good thermals and lift - and flap your arms really hard until you feel like you're starting to lift off the ground. Then start running, run your fastest until you get right to the edge and then just jump off, keep flapping and you'll fly! The first couple of times might not work so well but you'll get the hang of it.

Is there anyway that the site could be open and limited to vendor accounts only like the last time this sort of thing happened in November I believe so that us vendors can catch up on PMs and mark orders shipped that went out yesterday.

We appreciate all the hard work you are doing DPR I understand very little about the sort of thing you are dealing with and have full faith in you and your team that you will get things back up and running shortly.

I fear though that when it is back up the site will continue to have problems for the first hours since so many people will be trying to log on at the same time.  I think last time you opening it back up to vendors only for the first few hours was a smart move.

Keep working tirelessly as I know you have been we put full faith in our fearless leader.  Godspeed good sir.

I don't.  No.  I do not.

I am pretty sure if they had busted Silk Road yesterday it would have made news somewhere online by now.  I'm not positive but that is how I strongly feel.  There are also more high priority hidden services to bust.  There are sites that teach you to fuck children and how to take anonymous videos and photos with them and have you upload and share them with others.  Exploiting children is a much higher priority and those very large sites are still running and intact.  Yes I am aware they made some arrests from one of those sites years ago.  I do not recall the technical aspects of it though.

The only way for them to bust DPR and get to the servers is for him to do something stupid offline.  Hidden services inherently safe.  We can make bomb threats all we want on here unlike on clearnet.

No, it's totally true! You can now use your driver's license to sign up on Atlantis, to verify your identity. This speeds up the process of you getting arrested. You don't even have to transmit your address in plain text! Just scan your license, and slap on the cuffs!

Hahahaha. And they even have server side PGP! That's awesome! So you can think admittance of the felonies and federal offenses you're racking up on that site are totally secure! So secure that nobody but the prosecutor at your trial will be able to have access to them in full!
Woohoo Atlantis!

Hmmmmmm....

first we see stupid and obvious posts in the forum about the wonder of that Atlantis site and also separate ones about litecoin which IMO where attempts at viral marketing and where clearly 'sponsored' in some way THEN, or at the same time rather, we see a DDOS attack on the road... interesting that the main points of criticism about SR in the posts was the speed of the road and how it crashes so much accompanied by a reassurance that Atlantis was quick and smooth as Amazon...... How convenient for them that a random attack started just in time to make their bulshit look like steak...

Not saying that they did this.... but actually that's exactly what I'm saying... yup just makes me even more sure that Atlantis and even Litecoins are being manufactured by either big banks, LE or organized crime like the OMC or mob of some description.. IMO they are all as corrupt and capable of all this as each other so.... Stay strong Roadsters.. This place is special and DPR is a unique and valuable person to have overseeing these first steps towards the world most of us desire and believe is achievable maybe even in our lifetimes if we do it right.

I believe SR and DPR are our best chance to do it right and from the bottom of my heart I thank you Mr(Mrs/Miss?) Roberts and for what its worth; my life, although not perfect by any rate, is better for having found this place. I'm safer, happier and in better health because of this service and to me... its priceless... I hope you know that mate... Your diligence and tenacity is both appreciated and admired, by myself and I imagine a large number of other people.

I don't care how long it takes to get this fixed and so long as you are still in the fight I'm not giving up on here or you. I believe in the both of you and will be here as long as it is around.

Thank you so much for everything you do and have done...

Or buy directly from a Canadian vendor like MMM who is literally less than half the price you're charging. Never had a problem with customs, and It's $350 for 10g moonrock...as opposed to $875/10g from you.
But hey, hustle on bro.
I guess that kind of price is what people pay for domestic.

If anyone doesn't mind customs and doesn't want to be ripped off:

I've been able to add listings, just no images. I did however think at first it wasn't  working.

I went to add new listing. Typed it all out. Hit go. Came up with some 'xml error page' hit refresh and the new listing did come up under my 'current listings' page

I also went through the market and the listing exists. Just no pics unfortunately.

You're*

And I list in USD and your prices are listed as $87.55 so x 10 is 875.50. Not $800 at x10 as your quoted text attempts to say.
And it's hilarious that CF's MDMA is literally 28g's for $800. If someone buys 1gx10 in your jacked up prices, that's only 10g for almost $900.

100% positive feedback doesn't excuse being an asshole for flipping people's product so high. When I was an eager noob and only ordered domestic, I left pos feedback while rolling on my new product as well.

But the world is full of assholes, users, and scammers. SR is no exclusion.

If the suckers buy your MDMA, I guess they deserve it.
Once they take that plunge and cross customs, they'll wake up when they get that first bag of moonrock or brown sugar that is bulk and less than half the price of yours.

I generally don't like to talk negatively about people unless they're being especially retarded or warranting it. But seriously, domestic flipper vendors crack me up, but make me sad at the same time. Same kind of fuckery that happens on craigslist. Scammers, shammers, and 1-up'ers always taking advantage of anyone any chance they get.

Meh. If you're a noob reading this, I would buy from this wo/mans sources if I were you. Canada to US is relatively safe except for LL's security incident a few weeks (couple months? time is flying.) ago. Draw your own conclusions on that one.

Anyway, I'll stop derailing now :^x

Quote

I've never had a problem and ordered quite a bit. But their communication isn't the best. They've always seemed like a 'business not a friendship' type of vendor which isn't a bad thing. I've gotten it every time, and I have ordered some large weight across customs and stealth was absolutely amazing. 3 weeks ago they changed shit up and improved their stealth. MDMA tested well and exceeded even domestic whitewash I have gotten.

Even so. I would still recommend to go with CF directly over buying from retards like Ceelo. Canada -> US customs hasn't ever given me or friends a problem.

Hmmmmmm....

first we see stupid and obvious posts in the forum about the wonder of that Atlantis site and also separate ones about litecoin which IMO where attempts at viral marketing and where clearly 'sponsored' in some way THEN, or at the same time rather, we see a DDOS attack on the road... interesting that the main points of criticism about SR in the posts was the speed of the road and how it crashes so much accompanied by a reassurance that Atlantis was quick and smooth as Amazon......

Peace, respect and best wishes,

What a battle.   Nerd against script kitty.  I think we might now have php5 installed or whatever.
There was an exploit that was there Obviously. It's been toyed with for the past while and he knows it.  We all know it.  The site was slow and slower still, then strange errors and error messages that told the world too much about how the site works.

They waited until they were organized enough to exploit it finally, possibly for fee from another site.  Hey who knows. It's speculation.

No holds barred.  Nice fight though.  We are all more secure now because of it.  Each time someone exploits the site, they teach us a lesson and get stronger as a result. If they were smart, they would've kept it quiet and silently attacked at random for years .

TuggingOnSupermans cape username was razzing DPR pretty bad in the threads, but they spoke some truth about the infrastructure being used here.   At some point, you gotta replace the engine, even if its your baby.  It's hard to keep up to updates and shit these days. You fix one thing and it opens another hole elsewhere.  You need testers and a chief of security or something on staff.   Consult and cross consult.

Nobody ever criticized a general for calling in the marines to help.  It's what they do.   It's going to get a lot tougher in the future to solve these exploits.

. It's a shame we are working our boss to death, but at some point he is going to have to trust more people or else suffer a heart attack. No joke.  If he gets sick, we are done. You gotta wonder why he is doing this to himself, but he's a true giver and the most kindest, fairest pirate that ever lived.

Nice work.  (Bows down)

Hero as always.

It's important to get proper rest, sleep, so take as long as you need, because it's when you're tired people tend to start making mistakes they wouldn't otherwise do in a million years. For a person in your position, you need to take active steps to ensure you don't burnout. It's better to be at 100% 50% of the time, than at 50% 100% of the time in my opinion.

Also, in a pinch vendors can upload images through Tor elsewhere and link them. Perhaps not ideal, but as an interim solution until any bugs are quashed.

Honestly - and this is not based on any concrete evidence or any secret inside-knowledge - I feel like this is NOT due to a government agency.  The gov't would much rather make big busts and big headlines about taking down SR and its vendors / buyers.  They wouldn't do it quietly, and they wouldn't do it by simply causing users to migrate to another marketplace.  They want results, and for them, that means busts.  In my opinion, this is much more likely to be due to a rival marketplace or people trying to blackmail DPR or something like that.  Something non-government-related.

That's what I've been thinking too. It would  be a silly move on LE's part to attack SR in this way. All shutting down SR would do would be to force people to disperse to rival markets. It would increase the proliferation of more SR-like sites, having the opposite result of what was intended.

It's more likely a rival market, someone with a grudge, or blackmail.

I'm still convinced that SR will pull through this and emerge even stronger than before.

Does anything LE does make sense??
LE enabled all of us to do all sorts of silly drugs that you would never have done if they were legal. Making drugs illegal has had the opposite effect of what they are trying to accomplish but they continue to illegalize harmless drugs like pot or acid.. Not saying the
DDOSer is LE just pointing out a flaw in your logic..

LE needs to go catch some fucking rapists if its them causing this attack.
this is a fucking nightmare

Good point Sofish. I made the mistake of thinking they were smart :)

Whatever they try to do, won't work long-term. For every drug they ban, 5 new ones pop up. For every SR they bring down, 5 more will pop up. To quote Emerson: "Nothing, not all the armies of the world, can stop an idea whose time has come". Viva la Evolution!

Its strange that this page comes so fast. . . .

I'm going to download an offline version of the site onto my disk.
I can use that for reference when I need it and the site is down.

I have an idea...

Let's all patiently wait for this to clear, and not make a rukus about every move, every update, every login failed attempt.

I saw the order "processing" but I have no way of knowing if vendor was able to get on during any window and receive the order and then maybe send it out

I have sent him an email thru tormail....lets hope for the best.

totally. I have something in transit internationally, and I am sweating balls about it. I cannot communicate with the vendor because the site is down, and apparently doesn't check his forum Pm's.  :-X

welp, I almost prefer it was in process, because then I would cancel and order domestically! I have no idea if it's flagged in customs, not shipped, or coming to my box tomorrow morning. haha.

I feel gray hairs sprouting.

I'm not going anywhere b/c I don't like feelings that someone is trying to manipulate me.  It makes me very rebellious.
Luckily, I am not addicted to anything and bought more than enough drugs to last me a year or so before this all started due to the uncertainty of bitcoin.  Anyone who needs their meds, I feel for you.

This just seems like a tactic of the enemy and it's awfully peculiar that it coincided with the arrival of atlantis.  Tinfoil hats at the ready.

Yay its up! Now everyone buy some BOMB CANADIAN MDMA from me!!  USA to USA FREE SHIPPING!

Vendor profile: http://silkroadvb5piz3r.onion/silkroad/user/822595b9a3
Or buy directly from a Canadian vendor like MMM who is literally less than half the price you're charging. Never had a problem with customs, and It's $350 for 10g moonrock...as opposed to $875/10g from you.
But hey, hustle on bro.
I guess that kind of price is what people pay for domestic.

If anyone doesn't mind customs and doesn't want to be ripped off:

On topic:

Thanks DPR! It's running faster than usual too! You work wonders!

Your retarded, because i don't even have a 10g listing.....
1g/$80
.5g/$45
.130mg/$15

100% rating bro, and free shipping! hit me up! I get my MDMA from CanadianForger and LuckyLucciano. The best in the market!! only one way to find out!

I'm just going to point out that we do not endorse any resellers and cannot prove that Magic Ceelo has our product. Please do not advertise with our name.

Yes i buy my MDMA from you, shit, i can even tell you the return address you use, from so many packages i have ordered... ask me anything, haha.

Yeah those messages were getting out of hand. Honestly I hope they just create a "block user" feature that lets us block users from sending messages, placing orders, etc.

But I'm still pissed. I was seriously about to buy something when I chose my shipping option and entered my address and PIN and then I got the message. That's annoying as hell, if it had gone through, at least there would have been the chance it could go out in the mail today. I've been waiting to get my BTCs for days too!

EDIT: I was able to squeeze in and make my order! Now, let me just hope the vendor is able to see the order...

With every captcha I enter (I've tried three times), I receive a white page with the message 'invalid captcha' is it just me, or is everyone experiencing the same problem when they try to send a message?
