Title: help accessing SR on laptop
Post by: RR on June 08, 2012, 10:17 am
i need some help as i have tried everything but i still cant get my laptop to pick up SR. i had a few issues with windows registry so after many days of messing about, i formatted the hdd and reinstalled xp pro x86 on my laptop ive reinstalled all service packs and updates, when i run tor it works and then i get the congrats your using tor message but when i try loading a .onion url it just says can not find page, ive tried SR and the fourm but get the same message, but if i serch a .com it comes straight up. i know its not a issue with the SR servers as i can connect (like now) on my main PC, so what is the problem? im confused and its not the firewall as i checked it and there is an exception for tor. any help would be appreciated thank you  :)

It sounds like an issue with your localhost (127.0.0.1)

Your browser is still trying to load normal internet when you type .onion and not connect through Tor. Are you using the browser that pops up with Tor, or your own installation such as your normal Firefox?

There so worth the money. I bought my first Mac a couple years ago after growing tired of all the issues with Windows and have never looked back and Macs have come down in price quite a bit. You can buy a brand new Macbook Air for less than $900

Good luck

After doing some research it seems like the issue is definitely to do with your firewall in one way or another.

Since your PC can connect it must be your Windows firewall and not the router firewall.

You can disable the Windows firewall completely, it's useless anyway:

Click on Start and then Control Panel.

Click on the Network and Internet Connections link.

Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, double-click on the Network Connections icon and skip to Step 4.

Under the or pick a Control Panel icon section, click on the Network Connections link.

In the Network Connections window, right-click on your network connection and choose Properties.

Note: If you have a "high speed" Internet connection like Cable or DSL, or are on a network of some kind, your network connection will likely be titled Local Area Connection.

Choose the Advanced tab in the Properties window of your network connection.

In the Windows Firewall section under the Advanced tab, click on the Settings... button.

Choose the Off (not recommended) radio button in the Windows Firewall window.

Click OK in this window and click OK again in the Properties window of your network connection.

You can now close the Network Connections window.

Now that the Windows Firewall is disabled, repeat whatever steps caused your problem to see if disabling this option has fixed your problem.

Also go to Start --> Run --> Services.msc

Scroll down to "Windows Firewall" and double click. Then from the drop down menu click "Disabled" and then click OK

Now restart  and try Tor again.

Filezilla won't be causing the problem, and it's nothing in your registry. I'd try another fresh Windows install. Are you using a pirated version of XP? If so I can point you to a better one which I'm using and I know works.

That's what I mean. You shouldn't be installing all the service packs etc afterwards, use a version of Windows that comes with them all preinstalled on the disk.

From PirateBay:
https://thepiratebay.se/torrent/7270478/Microsoft_Windows_XP_Professional_SP3_Integrated_May_2012

This is a nice version, up to date as of May 2012 and works with Tor / SR etc ready to go.
