Hello mate! there are two main options liberte or tails, i personally use liberte but tails is good too.

Below is a link to a great guide on setting up liberte to run off of a usb stick.

Setup is fairly straight forward but if you need any help just let me know.

Also below is a guide on setting up pidgin again fairly easy and straight forward.

And a PGP utility is already installed on liberte by default, im assuming you have used pgp before but if you require some help setting it up just let me know.

You can easily run Tor from a USB stick, but I'm not too sure about PGP and Pidgin. For these programs to be run off of a USB stick, they would have to be portable (either that, or allow users to install them on to removable media). If you want to consider using a live CD instead, have a look at Tails. Do not use Liberte, as the browser there is known to leak DNS requests.

I use TOR on a USB and its very practical (just make sure to close all other browsers or internet connections) - i still have to sort out how to implement a portable PGP of which i have read about in the forums, but no success so far. The USB works with WinXP, Win7 and Win2K, unfortunately not with OSX on my notebook.

I run Knoppix on a USB.  It installs automatically with a 256 bit encryption password.  In addition, I have it installed on a USB Stick with a 10 Digit Hardware Pin with built in 256 bit encryption.  Knoppix is so easy to install to USB its unbelievable.

Issues with the filesystem on the USB stick, maybe?

no, the usb stick is readable and the mac app is verified, tor just doesn't install on the mac, no osx version of tor runs on my powerbook, i have no idea why :(

I bet https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tor-browser-bundle-mac-osx-and-1058 has something to do with it. I believe version 0.2.2.35-5 of the Tor Browser Bundle will work, you should be able to find it on https://archive.torproject.org/tor-package-archive/torbrowser/osx/

thank you squirrel! i tried several different bundles but none of them seems to work, I'll have to wait for the upcoming version and use my windows USB until then.
oh perhaps anyone can tell me where to get a portable encryption tool? i heard something about it here but a google search did not really help further...

The latest version of Tails came out on April 25 (version 0.11) and it has PERSISTENCE.  Yeah, so now you can keep files in an encrypted volume.  When the GnuPG feature is activated your PGP keys are stored in the persistent volume.  Same with Pidgin.

I'm just trying it out today so I can't say if it's bug-free, but it looks promising.

tails.boum.org is the place to start.

I use Tails.  Liberte is fine, just Tails works good for me.  Mostly cuz it's debian based, and if u know linux, easy enough to focus on.

A very handy thing I do is keep everything *else* I need on LastPass, and just use the webBased login, where I can get all my sites, and passwords, and they have super secret places to stash everything I need.

So I boot into Tails, first go to 'Mouse' and set my keypad to slowdown, then log in to my Network, then log into LastPass, then I"m good to go...Tails has perfect setup with PGP and everything I need, and I stash any other shit I need on LastPass.

YOu kind of have to do the footwork yourself, tho, on setting it all up and getting used to it...Tails keeps me 'honest' if you know what I mean: I don't end up stashing dangerous shit on my pc with it...but again, liberte linux is fine, try both, depends somewhat on which computer u use: they both work fine on xp and win7 but not on chromeos haha....
